Job Summary/Basic Function

All full-time faculty teach assigned classes established by the SLCC Full Time Faculty Handbook for Compensation and Workload and the Academic Freedom, Professional Responsibility and Tenure Policy in a manner that reflects the mission and values of Salt Lake Community College. Tenured and tenure-track faculty participate in teaching, professional activities, and college service.

All Faculty will maintain an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences.
You are required to maintain professional boundaries with all SLCC students.

Essential Job Responsibilities

1. Provide effective student-centered instruction and assessment.
2. Alongside department colleagues, build a process of continuous quality improvement for relevant programs.
3. Comply with all college employee policies and procedure
4. Comply with the Academic Freedom, Professional Responsibility, and Tenure policy
5. Comply with FERPA policy and other pertinent local, state, and federal regulations.
6. Maintain professional communication etiquette with students.
7. Become a contributing member of the academic unit by engaging in collegial communications and working closely with colleagues and academic supervisors to enhance student success.
8. Maintain a meaningful on-campus presence to enhance community, serve students on campus, and collaborate with colleagues. Campus presence can reflect teaching, professional activities, and/or service as established with your academic supervisor.

Expectations for Effective Teaching

1. Create a learning environment focused on student success for each modality taught.
2. In the case of online instruction, facilitate regular and substantive interaction in online courses conducted and observable in the official LMS.
3. Demonstrates the incorporation of active and applied learning in courses taught.
4. Provide appropriate feedback for all assignments that allows students to progress in the course.
5. Be available to meet with students outside of class a minimum of 5 hours/week for student consultation hours.
6. Consistently improve pedagogy, course quality, design, and course integrity in response to course, program, and/or college-wide assessment of student learning.
7. Use appropriate resources and technology in the delivery of courses.
8. Respond to student communication promptly (generally within 1-2 working days).

Expectations for Professional Activity and Development

1. Stay current in field and maintain necessary credentials, professional skills, and teaching competencies consistent with department standards.
2. Collaborate with colleagues by soliciting feedback.
3. Engage in discipline-specific activities.
4. Expand knowledge of teaching practices to enhance student learning and success.
5. Participate in mentoring relationships, serving as a mentor and/or mentee in the department and college.
6. Participate in mandatory departmental and college professional development.

Expectations for Service to the College

1. Provide service to the institution through appropriate participation in academic and college committee assignments and departmental and college need.
2. Engage in the student advising process, formally and/or informally as needed.
3. Participate in the formulation and implementation of department initiatives.
4. Mentor and provide formative feedback to adjunct faculty.
5. Serve community partners as content area experts as appropriate.

KSA

Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, culture, ethnic background, and abilities, to maintain good working relationships across the College. The ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities. Competency in Canvas. Effective written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of computer information programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe, etc.

Minimum qualifications

M.S./M.A. in Political Science with an emphasis on American Government from an accredited university.
Two years teaching at an institution of higher education (graduate and adjunct teaching applicable)

Applications after this date will be reviewed on a need by need basis until a candidate is selected for hire.

Selected finalist will be required to participate in a teaching demonstration and will be asked to provide recommendation letters.

SLCC HR Dept will conduct criminal background check and possible drug screen on the selected finalist.

The base salary is a 9-month Academic Year appointment and paid over annual basis. Additional compensation may be available when teaching overload classes.
Summer Semester is paid at 23.5% of base for a full teaching load.

Preferred Qualifications

• Earned Doctorate in Political Science with an emphasis in American Government and Politics
• Two years teaching full-time at an institution of higher education (in-person classes)
• Two years teaching at a community college (in-person classes)
• Experience in designing and teaching courses with innovative high-impact practices, project-based learning, undergraduate research, and community engagement
• Demonstrated success in working in settings with students from diverse backgrounds
• Experience teaching in other modalities in addition to in-person
