Position Description

The McGill University Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital (The Neuro) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences are inviting applications for a Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Research) in the field of Metabolism and Brain, with specific expertise in cohort design and/or neuroimaging. The role includes establishing an independent research program and supervising students. This will be a three-year (renewable) appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital) is an integral part of McGill University, located in downtown Montreal, one of the most multicultural and lively cities in North America. McGill University offers an exceptional international research environment in neuroscience recognized by the recent award of a Canada Research Excellence Chair (CERC) in Metabolism and Brain. The neuroscience community at McGill and in greater Montreal is one of the largest and most diverse in North America.

The Neuro provides a highly integrated research and clinical environment, with 9 research groups home to approximately 80 principal investigators, clinics specialized in neurology and neurosurgery, and a clinical research unit conducting multiple clinical trials. This provides a unique environment for studying fundamental and applied neuroscience. The Neuro has embarked on a journey to set a global precedent as the first academic institute to fully embrace the principles of Open Science. In that context, the Institute highly encourages its researchers to work under these principles.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be actively involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery where they will be expected to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm, and excellence in research. The incumbent will be expected to:

  • Conduct vigorous cutting-edge research, augmenting our existing efforts in the field of Neurometabolism, with specific focus on metabolism and dementia, as part of the Brain Body Cohort (BBC);
  • Develop a research program in their own areas of expertise and in coherence with the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery and The Neuro;
  • Independently acquire sufficient funds to support training of graduate students at the MSc and PhD level;
  • Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications and other knowledge translation and exchange activities.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

  • Have a PhD in neuroscience or a related field of research;
  • Possess advanced post-doctoral training with specific background in metabolic/adiposity research;
  • Exhibit evidence of both an exceptionally strong research productivity and the ability to attract competitive funding in their own area of expertise and in coherence with the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery and The Neuro;
  • Have demonstrated potential to advance the field of neuroscience;
  • Have a demonstrable interest in research with a track record of successful and synergistic collaborations;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to, and in accordance with circumstances, a track record in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI);
  • Fluency in English is essential; a working knowledge of French, or a commitment to acquiring it within a few years of appointment is preferred.
