Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream
The School of Accounting and Finance in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo invites applications for one position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream for a three-year probationary term, with the option to apply for permanence in accordance with university policy.
The successful candidate will contribute to instruction in entrepreneurial finance, with particular relevance to accounting and finance, and will collaboratively co-lead the cross-campus Student Venture Fund, supporting experiential learning by providing students with hands-on experience in venture investing. While serving on the Fund, the teaching load is typically 50% (five courses per year), with the remaining 50% devoted to service, a substantial portion of which supports the Student Venture Fund, alongside contributions to the School, Faculty, and University.
Candidates must hold a university degree in a finance or business-related field, complemented by substantial professional experience and deep, hands-on expertise in areas such as venture capital, business valuation, data analytics, and investment finance, along with demonstrated strength in both business strategy and organizational leadership. They will demonstrate strong knowledge of early-stage investment and capital allocation, with proven experience applying these principles in practice, and the ability to support experiential, practice-based learning through mentoring students in investment analysis and engagement with entrepreneurs and investors. Strong professional networks within the venture capital and startup ecosystem are essential. Experience integrating data analytics into decision-making, and a background supporting teaching across additional finance and accounting areas, are assets.
The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of teaching effectiveness, or strong potential for teaching excellence, and the capacity for academic leadership in a Canadian post-secondary environment. A Master’s degree and/or CFA, CBV, CPA certification would be considered assets. Candidates who demonstrate thought leadership, particularly through engagement in entrepreneurial ecosystems, will be viewed favourably.
