Assistant Professor/Instructor of English - One-Year Temporary

SVSU invites applicants for a one-year, temporary position to be hired either as an Assistant Professor of English, with a completed Ph.D. by the time of appointment, or as an Instructor of English, if ABD. This one-year temporary position begins July 1, 2026. Teaching responsibilities are in-person, on-campus (24 credit hours/year). Course load will be primarily in introductory and sophomore-level composition. A preferred secondary area would be creative non-fiction. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate fully in departmental activities, such as advising students, recruiting new students, and supporting outreach initiatives.

  • Duties are generally performed inside and not exposed to adverse conditions.
  • All work associated with this role must be performed within the state of Michigan.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned Ph.D. from an accredited institution in English or a closely related field to be considered for the rank of Assistant Professor. ABD candidates will be considered for the rank of Instructor.
  • Demonstrated success in teaching first-year writing courses
  • Experience teaching and mentoring a broad spectrum of undergraduate students
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new software quickly.
  • Experience and ability to positively interact with all members of the campus community
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodations.

  • Expertise in Creative Non-Fiction
