Assistant Research Scientist - AI-Linked Cytology (P.I.: Dr. John McDevitt)

The McDevitt Laboratory within the Bioengineering Institute and the Department of Molecular Pathobiology at New York University is seeking a full-time Assistant Research Scientist to support the development of AI-linked cytology diagnostic technologies.

Background

The McDevitt Lab has led innovations in the creation and validation of lab-on-a-chip diagnostic platforms that integrate microfluidics, cytology, and artificial intelligence. These technologies are designed to enable early disease detection and precision oncology care by digitizing biological information at the single-cell level. We are now expanding our efforts to build large clinical databases essential for AI-based diagnostic model development.

The successful candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of scientists, clinicians, and engineers to support cytology testing, method development, and data generation critical to advancing these next-generation diagnostic tools.

Responsibilities

  • Design and carry out hypothesis-driven experiments to support technology and product development
  • Execute and validate cytology-based assays, focusing on the processing and analysis of clinical samples
  • Assist in building a large, high-quality clinical database for training AI diagnostic models
  • Generate technical documents, including requirements, specifications, test plans, and experimental reports
  • Validate test methods, ensuring robustness, reproducibility, and compliance with established protocols
  • Perform cell staining, imaging, and image-based cytology measurements
  • Analyze cell-based data using software tools (e.g., ImageJ, CellProfiler)
  • Maintain detailed lab records, manage sample inventories, and contribute to data integrity initiatives
  • Work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment

NYU offers excellent benefits. Join our dynamic team at NYU and contribute to the development of groundbreaking technologies that are transforming early disease detection and precision diagnostics.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $55,000 - $65,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Required:

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in a life science or engineering discipline (e.g., Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering)
  • Strong hands-on experience in experimental design and laboratory research
  • Direct experience with cytology techniques, including cell staining, sample preparation, and imaging
  • Familiarity with image analysis software for cell-based data quantification
  • Strong technical writing skills to prepare study protocols, test plans, and reports
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team

Preferred:

  • Experience handling human clinical samples under biosafety guidelines
  • Experience with microfluidics or single-cell analysis platforms
  • Knowledge of AI/machine learning concepts related to biomedical data (a plus, but not required)

Applicants must submit:

  • A current CV or resume
  • A cover letter highlighting your interest in the role and relevant experience
  • A list of at least three professional references (highly recommended)
