The School of Marine and Environmental Programs (SMEP) in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of New England (UNE) invites applications for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor in Environmental Studies, starting in August 2026. We seek an ecologist with a particular interest in plant ecology, freshwater ecology or wetland ecology. The successful candidate will join a diverse group of faculty and staff with expertise across a broad array of specialties including invertebrate biology and physiology, ecology, ornithology, marine mammalogy, aquaculture, oceanography, climate change natural and social science, GIS, and marine policy and management.

The School of Marine and Environmental Programs is located on UNE's Biddeford waterfront campus, with easy access to a variety of coastal ecosystems including rocky coastlines, sandy beaches, mudflats and salt marshes-particularly UNE's 363 acre teaching and research forest and Ram Island. The program is housed in the Arthur P. Girard Marine Science Center which has a 600,000-gallon capacity flow-through seawater system. The school is listed in Biology Explorer's list of top ten marine biology colleges, College Choice's list of the top fifteen bachelor's programs in marine biology, and College Magazine's list of the best 10 colleges for marine biology.
UNE is a private, non-profit, comprehensive R2 university, with campuses in Portland and Biddeford, Maine and Tangier, Morocco. The College of Arts and Sciences is located on Biddeford's waterfront campus in southern Maine, with easy access to coastlines, forested areas, freshwater lakes, nearby mountains, and city-based amenities. Responsibilities
The school seeks candidates who can teach environmental science and studies lecture and laboratory courses at the introductory level and upper-level lecture and laboratory courses in the areas of conservation biology and field ecology. This is primarily a teaching position (80% teaching; 20% service), teaching the equivalent of 12 credits per semester. Potential courses include: Conservation and Preservation; Field Methods in Conservation, Introduction to Environmental Issues, Wetland Ecology and Conservation (lab), Ecological Monitoring (lab), Plant Systematics with Conservation Applications (+lab), Case Studies in Preserving Biodiversity and Protected Areas, and Environmental Pollution: Ecosystems, Wildlife & Human Health - although the successful candidate will certainly be encouraged to develop courses within their expertise. The successful candidate will also participate in curriculum development, academic advising, recruiting, course and program assessment, and service to the school, college and university.
Qualifications
A Ph.D. in conservation biology, biology, environmental science, ecology, or a related field is required. Post-doctoral training is preferred. The successful candidate must have a well-rounded knowledge of field ecology. Candidates who use techniques that would further our students' general preparedness for their future careers and who have done fieldwork in regional ecosystems will be strongly considered.
