About the Role:
The Assistant Teaching Professor is responsible for coordinating,
leading, and teaching courses in the MSN program. The NTTR MSN
Faculty upholds academic integrity, follows standards of practice,
and collaborates with the all MSN and SON faculty to ensure
curriculum alignment with CCNE Essentials and the national
standards applicable to the assigned track. The role supports
graduate preparation for national certification eligibility in the
PMHNP track, fosters program effectiveness, and promotes a
student-centered, high-quality learning environment.
Specific responsibilities include:
Organizational Relationship:
- Workload assigned by the MSN Program Director and SON
Director
- Evaluated annually by the Associate School Director and/or SON
Director and with input from peer faculty
Maintain regular, proactive communication with MSN Faculty and
Program Director regarding course operations, student concerns, and
any emerging issues, ensuring alignment with program expectations
and timely resolution.
Program Leadership:
- Actively engage in SON, MSN program, course, and university
meetings, as designated by the SON Director and Associate
Director/MSN Program director to support shared governance and
program effectiveness.
- Collaborate regularly with other MSN Faculty to address MSN
curriculum, course content, grading practices, student concerns,
and faculty or university-related matters. Escalate unresolved
issues to the MSN Program Director following appropriate
communication pathways.
- Contribute to program success through participation in
activities related to student admission, progression, and
orientation, as well as curriculum review and enhancement for
students enrolled in or applying to the MSN program.
- Ensure alignment with CCNE Standards, the national competencies
applicable to AACN and NONPF competencies, and other professional
standards as appropriate.
Faculty Leadership:
- Maintain an active presence and engagement throughout the MSN
program by monitoring responsiveness, grading practices, and
interactions with students.
- Collaboratively review and discuss student assignments
receiving a grade of 80% or below to ensure timely academic support
and consistency in evaluation.
- Plan, teach, manage, and evaluate lectures and course
activities while ensuring instructional excellence and innovation
in content delivery.
- Review course materials, including readings, textbooks, and
learning resources, to ensure alignment with current evidence-based
practice, AACN Essentials, CCNE Standards, NONPF, and other
professional standards as appropriate and communicate any necessary
updates to the applicable MSN Track Coordinator(s) to maintain
curricular relevance and accuracy.
- Collaborates closely with the MSN Program Director/Associate
Director and MSN faculty to maintain the quality of courses and
overall program effectiveness while fostering an enriching learning
experience for students.
Other duties include:
Be accessible and available to students, supervisor, staff and
colleagues during NKU operation hours (8:00 am – 4:30 pm
EST).
Serve on SON and program committees as assigned and attend SON,
program, and other meetings in person or virtually; be an active
participate in SON, program, and university needs.
Education
Doctoral degree in Nursing or related field required. Advanced
Practice Certification as an PMHNP.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of two years of clinical nursing practice
required.
- Must possess an active and unencumbered registered nursing (RN)
license in State of residence and an advanced practice license as
an PMHNP
- At least three-years of full-time, past and current direct
patient care as an PMHNP.
- Previous graduate- level teaching required
- Previous online teaching experience required
- Experience or expertise with course content
- Pass pre-employment criminal background check as mandated by
state law
Professional Expectations:
- Maintain active unencumbered RN licensure and, for APRN track
positions, APRN certification/licensure
- Maintain current knowledge of professional discipline and
educational methodologies through continuing professional
development
- Maintain part-time clinical practice as needed to maintain APRN
certification/licensure; ensure clinical practice (max release is
one day weekly) does not interfere with faculty duties
- Maintain current knowledge of program policies, procedures, and
student progress
- Adhere to faculty professional standards as delineated in the
NKU Faculty Handbook
- Utilize nku.edu email for ALL course communications – students
are required to do the same
- Teach and precept as needed to meet program needs
Required Training:
- Completes ‘Best Practices for Online Teaching’ Canvas course as
assigned
- Completes required Faculty Development courses annually
- Complete Clinical systems training currently used in program
(i.e., Medatrax)
