Position Summary

This position encompasses leadership for campus facilities and sustainability efforts to ensure an efficient, compliant and future-focused campus. The Assistant Vice President of Facilities and Planning and Chief Sustainability Officer (AVP-CSO) oversees campus master planning, construction, facilities operations, sustainability and environmental health and safety to meet campus, SUNY, and New York State goals. The Assistant Vice President also serves as a member of the Vice President of Finance and Administration's Senior Staff and often represents the campus with the State University Construction Fund and Dormitory Authority of the State of New York. The Assistant Vice President is responsible for achieving facilities deliverables, supporting team members in professional development and utilizing proven mentoring, communication expertise and team building skills, keeping momentum and communication flowing as campus needs, skills and projects evolve.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with increasing responsibilities in facilities management and sustainability leadership or equivalent degree and experience, OR Associate's degree with extensive senior-level facilities management experience in a not-for-profit environment. Military facilities and logistics experience will be considered.
  • Expertise in energy management, HVAC systems, central plant operations, regulatory compliance, capital planning, and construction oversight.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, budget management, and team-building skills to effectively manage large workforces and sustainability initiatives.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate (verbal and written) across diverse campus constituencies and to represent the College in internal and external sustainability and facilities-related matters.
  • Ability to provide examples of project successes during interview process.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive working/teaching environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree
  • Certifications in a related field such as Certified Educational Facilities Professional Designation
  • Experience with State entities such as SUNY, the State University Construction Fund, and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment.
  • Knowledge of maintenance management systems and sustainability-focused technology solutions and the use of dashboards.
  • Experience in a higher education, public institution, or nonprofit setting.

Supervision Received: Reports to the Vice President for Finance and Administration

Supervision Exercised: Supervises three directors, secretary and budget manager.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Leadership: Directly oversees Facilities Services, Facilities Planning and Construction, Sustainability Operations, Energy Management and Environmental Health & Safety. Oversees adherence to applicable State and Federal regulations including those relating to occupational safety, building codes, engineering standards, and environmental conservation. Leads strategic capital planning, facilities maintenance, fleet management, heating and cooling enhancements and maintenance, and promotes operational efficiency measures. Collaborating with Office of Diversity and Equity to achieve campus goals regarding diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
  • Sustainable Facilities Management Program and Preventative Maintenance: As part of campus master planning, leads the further development of and manages the response to SUNY Geneseo's Climate and Sustainability Action Plan, and the Master Energy plan, aligning campus, SUNY and state directives within targeted goals. Providing leadership and accountability for sustainability initiatives, including greenhouse gas emissions reduction, energy conservation, waste management, and water efficiency. Fostering a culture of sustainability among students, faculty, and staff through education, outreach, and engagement initiatives. Working with academic departments, Residential Life, and student groups to integrate sustainability into curricula, programs, and campus life. With campus colleagues, facilitates student interest and participation in the SUNY Climate Corps Internships, Empire State Service Corps Internships, and other green workforce programs. Developing, coordinating, and/or leveraging sustainability outreach events. Working with the campus advancement team to identify, seek, and secure grant funding, corporate partnerships, and other savings programs.
  • Facilities Planning and Construction: Further enhances the relationship with the State University Construction Fund to advance the campus master plan and goals of being a showcase campus and a consistent model of best practices. Ensures continued compliance with state and federal environmental regulations, including safety protocols, procurement, building codes, and engineering standards.
  • Planning and Budgeting, including Financial Management: Oversees budgets of $10 million+ operating and $60 million+ capital, ensuring fiscal responsibility and effective resource allocation to support on time, budget and scope goals.
  • Management and Supervision: Advances Finance and Administration Division and the Facilities Department goals while promoting service to the campus community and supporting employees. Mentors Facilities team members in supervision and advancement of professional development for 160+ employees. Focuses on building further career paths and enhancing succession planning over time.
