Associate/Assistant Professor in Industrial Design

The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized research-oriented comprehensive public university in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located at the west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The GBA is rapidly developing into one of the leading technology and innovation hubs of the world. UM is placed No. 180 in the THE World University Rankings and placed No. 285 in the QS World University Rankings. With a scenic campus of approximately 1 km2 on Hengqin island, UM has achieved significant progress in the past decade as evidenced by its rising international repute, state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, and the establishment of three State Key Laboratories in microelectronics, Chinese medical sciences, and internet of things for smart city. To support economic diversification of MSAR and deepen collaboration between MSAR and Guangdong Province in Hengqin island, UM will continue to invest in cutting-edge research and develop interdisciplinary programmes in key strategic areas including precision oncology, advanced materials, regional oceanography, artificial intelligence and robotics, data science, cognitive and brain science and economics and finance. Leveraging its ‘4-in-1’ model of education and residential college system, UM provides all-round undergraduate education, nurturing talent to support social and economic development in MSAR and the GBA as a whole. In addition, UM is currently establishing a campus in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, which is expected to be operational in 2028. With unprecedented growth and development, UM offers a wide range of opportunities for high-calibre talents at all levels to achieve their career goals. It may be noted that English is the working language and the primary medium of instruction at UM.

The Department of Arts and Design of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for the position of Associate/Assistant Professor in the areas of Industrial Design.

According to the current plan, a Faculty of Design will be established at the new campus, comprising a Department of Industrial Design. The department will offer undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.

Qualifications

  1. A doctoral degree (or equivalent terminal degree) in Industrial Design or a closely related field;
  2. Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, research and application-based innovation, with expertise in one or more of the following areas: a. sustainable product-service-system innovation, including circular design, systems thinking, service-led strategies for ecological and social transformation; b. more-than-human-centered interaction and UI/UX design, encompassing inclusive, ethical, and planetary perspectives beyond individual usability; c. digital-physical design integration, such as intelligent product design, tangible user interfaces, digital fabrication, or responsive materials; d. advanced design methodologies, including research-through-design, critical and speculative design approaches;
  3. A strong record or demonstrable potential in practice-led design, supported by real-world projects, impactful implementations, or industry-academic collaborations;
  4. Proficiency in mainstream design software and emerging prototyping tools and materials, including physical computing, additive manufacturing, and sustainable material experimentation;
  5. Evidence of academic publications and/or recognized creative outputs, such as design patents, curated exhibitions, funded projects, or international design awards;
  6. Experience teaching and mentoring in studio-based, transdisciplinary, or research-intensive design courses at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels;
  7. Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in Chinese is considered an asset, especially for cross-cultural communication, community-based research, and teaching.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty as early as January 2026.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP1,052,800 (approximately USD129,980) for the position of Associate Professor and MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) for the position of Assistant Professor will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
