The University of New England College of Dental Medicine (UNE CDM) invites applications for Associate Dean for Community Partnerships. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) 12-month clinical track faculty appointment at the Associate Clinical Professor or Clinical Professor rank with an administrative appointment as the Associate Dean for Community Partnerships. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Interviews of qualified candidates will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Responsibilities

The Associate Dean for Community Partnerships reports directly to the Dean of the College of Dental Medicine (CDM) and is responsible for the overall management of pre-doctoral community-based experiential learning.

The Associate Dean for Community Partnerships oversees maintenance of the CDM's network of community-based clinical education sites and helps to ensure learning at these sites is grounded in the core values of humanism, compassion, evidence-based dentistry, and technical excellence. The Associate Dean for Community Partnerships provides leadership and calibration for the Community-Based Education site preceptor faculty on an ongoing basis and is responsible for compliance with the accreditation standards established by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The Associate Dean for Community Partnerships works collaboratively with the Community-Based Education Manager to manage predoctoral students assigned to clinically-affiliated sites each semester.

Additionally, the Associate Dean for Community Partnerships creates and maintains collaborative connections with philanthropic community health administrators, dentists (preceptors), and staff in clinics serving vulnerable populations in the interest of promoting oral health, enhancing dental student education, and increasing access to care for vulnerable populations in a financially sustaining manner. The Associate Dean for Community Partnerships works collaboratively with the other CDM Assistant and Associate Deans, Department Chairs, Group Practice Leaders, clinical leaders, and faculty to ensure students provide integrated and calibrated patient care. The Associate Dean for Community Partnerships is expected to have a preclinical, clinical or didactic teaching role, consistent with their area of expertise.

The Associate Dean for Community Partnerships supervises one professional staff member, the Community-Based Education Manager. Your success on our team will require excellent leadership and interpersonal skills and a desire to create a collaborative environment that fosters transparency, collegiality, and diverse viewpoints. Key responsibilities include:

Administrative
  • Provide leadership and serve as the point of contact for faculty preceptors at Community-Based Education (CBE) sites.
  • Organize, oversee, and provide training and calibration for faculty preceptors.
  • Monitor procedures completed by students at CBE sites and address areas of concern with CBE site preceptor faculty.
  • Assure compliance and appropriate documentation to maintain accreditation status by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
  • Develop and maintain policy and procedures for CBE in compliance with applicable regulations and monitor and ensure site and preceptor compliance.
  • Measure and communicate the quality and impact of the CBE program.
  • Organize annual preceptor faculty development activities in compliance with CODA accreditation standards.
  • Oversee the collection and archiving of data necessary for reporting and maintaining compliance with CODA accreditation standards.
  • In consultation with the Dean and University administration, lead CDM efforts on policy and advocacy issues.
  • Maintain compliance and oversight with University's policies and procedures and other rules and regulations governing the CBE portion of the curriculum.
  • Monitor CBE site preceptor faculty and staff and student compliance with CBE policies and address incidences of noncompliance.
  • Continually assess and improve operational processes.
  • Responsible for a formal system of quality assurance and regular assessment of the quality of care delivered at CBE sites. Produce and collect quality assurance data and report regularly to the Dean of the College or her designee.
  • Monitor, report, and follow-up related to student complaints and incident reports.
  • Assist with the preparation and review of accreditation self-study documentation and participate in accreditation site visits.
  • Ensure credentialing for preceptor faculty.
  • Synthesize and disseminate program outcomes and best practices through publications and presentations at regional and national conferences.
  • Monitor current and emerging trends in CBE research and programming.
  • Engage local, regional, and national stakeholders to assess community needs and inform CDM programming and research priorities.
  • Conduct ongoing quantitative and qualitative evaluation of CBE programs including surveys, focus groups, interviews, case studies, etc.
  • Participate as a member of the CDM's Dean's Council and Dean's Leadership Council and serve on appropriate College and University Committees as assigned.
  • Maintain a strong supportive relationship with other administrators, faculty, professional staff, preceptors, students, and staff at CBE sites.
  • Provide onboarding for preceptor faculty and professional staff at CBE sites.
  • Maintain membership in the American Dental Association, American Dental Education Association, Maine Dental Association, Greater Portland Dental Society, as well as other appropriate professional organizations.
  • This position requires regular travel to existing and potential CBE sites to monitor student experience and ensure sites are meeting program outcomes.
Strategic
  • In collaboration with the Dean, Associate/Assistant Deans, and other appropriate individuals, develop and implement new strategic directions for the College.
  • Ensure faculty and staff development and compliance with the Strategic Plan for the CDM. Provide direction and assistance in alignment of all faculty, staff, and programs with the direction of the Dean.
  • Collaborate with Department Chairs to implement strategic initiatives and modern technology to benefit our patients and clinical education program.
  • Develop positive and mutually productive relationships with appropriate individuals/groups on campus and in the broader community.
  • Participate in the Dean's Leadership team to develop a mission-based strategy for allocation of resources.
  • Commit to actively fostering a welcoming culture of inclusion and belonging.
  • Special projects and other activities as assigned by the Dean.
  • Demonstrate solid leadership in innovation, teaching, change management, and financial management.
  • Represent the college in the greater dental community and attend important college, university, and community events.
Teaching
  • Preclinical, clinical or didactic teaching role, consistent with area of expertise.
Qualifications

Qualified candidates must possess a D.D.S./D.M.D. degree, or international equivalent and have successfully completed the NBDE Parts I & II or the INBDE and a regional licensure examination (e.g. ADEX). Specialists must have completed a CODA-accredited graduate program and be Board Certified, or eligible for Board Certification. The candidate must have active Maine Board of Dental Practice licensure (full license) by their start date.

Other requirements include:

  • Practical knowledge and experience in the public health arena.
  • Dental practice regulatory knowledge to include a deep understanding of HIPAA, OSHA, and CDC Guidelines, as well as state-specific requirements for states were CBE sites are located.
  • Practical knowledge and understanding of contemporary dental practices.
  • Strong track record of excellence in leadership, teaching, service, patient care, and research and scholarship.
  • Relevant teaching and management/administrative experience in an accredited college of dental medicine, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
  • Strong organizational, administrative, and personnel management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, creativity, resourcefulness, problem solving, and conflict management skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of health professions education, training, and research.
  • Experience with accreditation, preferably the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).
  • Ability to provide leadership in planning, policy formulation and implementation, and outcomes assessment.
  • Excellent ability to understand and support the mission and operations of the College and University.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of constituents within and external to the College and University.
  • Ability to convene groups, obtain consensus, think and plan strategically, and lead with transparency.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a positive and supportive role model for students.
  • Ability to handle detail-oriented assignments and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to foster teamwork, prioritize workload, delegate authority and ensure accountability.
  • Must be willing and able to travel, with a valid driver's license required.

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • Successfully held leadership positions in dental education.
  • Experience preparing accreditation self-study documentation and participating in accreditation site visits.
  • Demonstrated scholarship in education.
