Department Summary: Student Conduct and Academic Integrity supports the educational mission of the university by educating students about appropriate behavior, developing their ethical decision-making skills, and helping them understand how their actions affect others. If misconduct is alleged, Student Conduct and Academic Integrity provides prompt, fair, and impartial resolution to the matter, balancing both the interests of the individual student and the community at large.
Duties & Responsibilities:
This Associate Director provides leadership for SCAI’s core adjudication functions. The role ensures cases are processed promptly and equitably and ensures office/University wide compliance. By reviewing correspondence for accuracy and accountability, and supervising Coordinators, the Associate Director upholds due process and fosters a culture of integrity.
Key Responsibilities
Supervision & Workflow
- Directly supervise one Assistant Director, establishing clear expectations, consistent coaching, and ongoing performance feedback.
- Ensure casework processes are timely, accurate, and consistent with institutional policy, state and federal law, and national best practices.
- Implement case assignment protocols, manage workloads, and create systems of accountability that enhance efficiency and consistency.
- Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities to advance staff expertise in student conduct, conflict resolution, and compliance.
Case Review & Management
- Oversee the review of incident reports, hearing correspondence, and sanction letters to ensure legal accuracy, clarity, and adherence to due process.
- Triage all incoming cases, determining appropriate jurisdiction, routing, and response strategy.
- Administer the Faculty Administrative Resolution process and adjudicate the University’s most complex, sensitive, or precedent-setting cases, including student organization misconduct.
Compliance & Policy Leadership
- Oversee SCAI’s role in University compliance, ensuring adherence to the Clery Act, the biannual Student Organization Conduct Report, the Stop Campus Hazing Act, and other state/federal mandates.
Assessment & Best Practices
- Conduct post-case audits to assess fairness, compliance, and consistency; recommend process refinements as needed.
- Oversee peer-review auditing process
- Track trends in conduct data to inform prevention, risk management, and policy development.
- Benchmark against peer institutions and incorporate innovations from professional associations such as ASCA.
- Develop and present detailed case statistics to inform compliance reporting, annual reviews, and strategic planning initiatives.
Training & Professional Development
- Design, deliver, and evaluate comprehensive training for staff, hearing board members, faculty, and student leaders.
- Establish a professional development framework for SCAI staff that emphasizes continuing education, conference participation, and certifications.
Strategic Initiatives & Operations
- Partner with the Director on strategic planning, policy innovation, and operational improvements.
Other Duties
- Serve on University committees and task forces.
- Lead or contribute to educational outreach campaigns around academic integrity, hazing prevention, and student rights/responsibilities.
- Participate in the Dean of Students on-call rotation, providing crisis response and conduct expertise.
- Undertake special projects as assigned to strengthen SCAI’s impact and visibility across the University
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, law, or a related field or relevant professional experience.
- Five years of progressively responsible experience in student conduct, Title IX, or case management, including hearing board administration and supervision.
- Excellent written/oral communication, interpersonal, and public‑relations skills.
- Knowledge of federal/state laws relevant to student conduct (e.g., FERPA, Title IX, Clery).
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Maxient or similar conduct management software.
- Experience adjudicating student organization conduct and academic integrity cases.
- Demonstrated success implementing restorative and educational sanctions.
- Familiarity with university law enforcement or threat‑assessment work.
- Experience at a large, urban research university.
