Job Summary
Leads the maintenance, repair, and operational performance of all facilities equipment across the organization, with a strong presence in the field—not behind a desk. Provides strategic direction and daily technical leadership to staff, ensuring the university's operational needs are met through direct, on-site engagement. Makes real-time decisions and delivers technical clarity in dynamic environments to keep operations running smoothly. Monitors preventative maintenance programs, enforces safety compliance, and drives optimal system functionality. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to streamline workflows, manage budgets, and support the institution's mission through active, boots-on-the-ground involvement in daily operations.
Responsibilities
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitors workflow to maintain efficiency and high level of customer service
- Directs the day-to-day operations of the mechanical, electrical, heating and cooling, plumbing, carpentry, and building systems
- Meets with other staff members to discuss progress and to develop future courses of action
- Provides ongoing performance management, addresses concerns, orients, and trains employees, documents and verifies competencies, and identifies and suggests ways to develop skills
- Coordinates work of contractors and in-house projects for all systems
- Participates in developing departmental goals and objectives
- Assists in the direction and implementation of energy conservation and management programs; ensures identified projects are most cost effective and communicates goals and results to the organization
- Monitors outside service and repair contracts on plant equipment and utility systems by overseeing work to ensure satisfaction and timely completion of assigned work
- Plans, administers, and monitors the department's capital equipment, operations, and personnel budgets by reviewing prior budget expenses, regularly reviewing year-to-date expenses, investigating variances, and tacking corrective action
- Ensures department compliance with regulations and takes the necessary precautions, maintaining OSHA standards and other applicable federal, state, and municipal regulations, when working with hazardous chemicals, materials, and/or power equipment
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
Associate's degree from an accredited institution of higher education or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience
Other Required Qualifications
Current, valid, and unrestricted driver's license
Required Experience
Seven (7) years of experience in maintenance and operation in a commercial, industrial, or institutional setting including at least four(4) years of managerial and/or supervisory experience.

Preferred Educational Qualifications
An undergraduate or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in engineering or related field
Preferred Experience
Project Management experience
Proposed Salary

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
ABILITIES
Uses personal protective equipment as required
Able to handle multiple tasks or projects at one time meeting assigned deadlines
KNOWLEDGE
Working knowledge of HVAC and Electrical
Working knowledge of 12kV infrastructure and transformers and water-cooled chillers and hydronics
Familiar with Building Automation Systems and communication protocols
Demonstrated knowledge of HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing and Carpentry
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management and presentation skills
Strong leadership, technical expertise, and problem-solving skills
Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e., Microsoft Office suite, maintenance request management systems)
Strong attention to detail and follow up skills
Strong customer service skills and phone and e-mail etiquette

This is a supervisory position.
This position does not have any financial responsibilities.
This position will be required to drive.
This role is considered a position of trust.
This position does not require a purchasing card (P-Card).
This position may travel 25% - 49% of the time
