Job Description Summary

The Associate Director of Planned Giving works in collaboration with, and under the supervision of, the Executive Director of Planned Giving to market, solicit, and manage planned gifts for Penn Medicine. This includes gifts made through bequests and other deferred vehicles, life-income gifts, blended gifts, complex assets, and outright gifts with a focus on unrestricted term and unrestricted endowment designations. The Associate Director will support and enhance a proactive program of direct contact with alumni, grateful patients, friends, and faculty.

Job Responsibilities

  • Visit and communicate (e.g. letters, phone calls, video conferences, meetings, visits, events, etc.) with planned giving prospects as well as with their legal, tax, and financial advisors when applicable to cultivate, solicit, close, and steward planned gifts.
  • Develop planned giving strategies to help Penn Medicine Development and Alumni Relations (PMDAR) colleagues identify planned gift prospects within their portfolios and help advance and close deferred, blended, outright, and split-interest gifts to the school.
  • Work with Executive Director of Planned Giving and PMDAR colleagues to identify new Medical Legacy Circle (MLC) members each fiscal year. The MLC recognizes the nearly 1,600 individuals who have included Penn Medicine in their will or living trust, who have named Penn Medicine as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, life insurance policy or life income gift, or who have made a tax-advantaged gift of IRA assets by way of a qualified charitable distribution (QCD).
  • Work with PMDAR colleagues to provide planned giving component to active reunion program encouraging increased class participation and Medical Legacy Circle (MLC) membership.
  • Work with Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) annual fund colleagues to incorporate a planned giving component into appropriate communication and solicitation cycles for alumni and faculty.
  • Enhance and maintain the planned giving content on the Office of Planned Giving website (with technical support of PMDAR's Digital Media team) so the website reflects current legislative content and respond to online requests for planned giving information.
  • Develop planned giving prospect pipeline through responses to marketing program outreach; respond to requests for planned giving illustrations and information. Develop planned giving receipt expectancies based on actuarial life expectancies.
  • Coordinate stewardship activities with planned gift donors, including Medical Legacy Circle and Harrison Society annual luncheon.
  • Record planned giving donor activity in COMPASS (PMDAR's Salesforce-based CRM) and document planned gift expectancies and receipts; arrange for the acknowledgement of planned gifts.
  • Prepare planned giving illustrations using PGCalc software and customized bequest language.
  • Participate in and attend events and conferences (both local and national) as requested.
  • Implement other initiatives as the opportunities present themselves; perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and 3 to 5 years of progressive fundraising experience in planned giving and/or major gifts or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Advanced degree/certification in law or business is desirable but not required.
  • Desire to blend technical expertise in planned giving with outstanding donor engagement skills is required. Knowledge of tax implications of charitable giving including federal income, estate, and gift taxes desirable but not required.
  • Comfortable discussing philanthropy and planning in contemplation of mortality with tact and integrity; maintain confidentiality as appropriate.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and fluency with a range of software applications. Demonstrated office technology skills and aptitude for learning new software where appropriate. Must be comfortable with database management systems.
  • Proven organizational and interpersonal skills to work closely with development colleagues as part of dynamic team providing services to internal and external constituencies.
  • Self-motivated with ability to consistently meet goals and deadlines; juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously and exercise sound judgment in working with sensitivity information and various constituencies.
  • Enthusiasm and a high level of energy and flexibility are required. Ability and willingness to travel nationally and locally is required as is a valid driver's license for this position. Evening/Weekend work as needed.
