"Associate/Full Professor and Department Chair, Arabic and Near Eastern Languages"

The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages at the American University of Beirut invites applications for the position of Department Chair. The department seeks a scholar currently at the rank of Full or Associate Professor, with tenure, who has demonstrated success in research, teaching, and leading academic units. The department welcomes applicants specializing in Arabic Literature, covering all periods of the Arabic literary tradition including pre-modern Arabic Literature (including pre-Islamic, Umayyad, Abbasid, Mamluk, or Ottoman periods) and modern Arabic Literature (including the Nahḍa, modern and contemporary poetry and prose, thematic studies, modern Arab thought, gender studies, and related fields). The appointment is expected to begin on August 15, 2026.

The language of instruction in the department (and only in this department) is Standard Arabic (fuṣḥā), but mastery of English is an essential requirement. Applicants should demonstrate solid grounding in both the Arabic and Western classical heritages, including literary theory and grammar. A reading knowledge of French and/or German is highly desirable. Candidates must be able to teach humanities and Arabic communication skills courses in Arabic to native speakers of Arabic.
