Department Description:
The Office of the President team is responsible for supporting the President in his numerous duties as leader of the university. This includes strategic implementation of university initiatives; administrative support; communications assistance; interfacing with the President's Administrative and Strategic Leadership Teams and the Board of Trustees; stewarding internal and external relationships; maximizing the president's time and ensuring his effectiveness as the university's chief executive, fundraiser, voice and visionary.

Detailed Description:
The Associate General Counsel provides a high level of professional legal service to the University of San Diego. The Associate General Counsel will advise University personnel on a wide array of legal issues arising in the context of higher education and will interact with members of the legal profession, outside agencies, and others as required to perform his or her job responsibilities. Areas of practice will include, but are not limited to, research compliance, contracts and transactional work, construction, real estate, student matters, employee matters, academic matters, intellectual property, athletics, risk management, and other areas as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides legal counsel and guidance to the University's Board of Trustees and administration on matters pertaining to the University's activities and operations.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries from University personnel on legal matters relating to the University's activities and operations.
  • Anticipates, researches, and identifies legal issues in order to develop legal strategies and solutions in matters involving the University's activities and operations.
  • Reviews, consults on, and drafts, as necessary, University policies and procedures.
  • Reviews, consults on, and drafts, as necessary, contracts with third parties, including but not limited to contracts for the purchase of goods and services, research agreements, real estate transactions, construction projects, and affiliation agreements.
  • Represents or oversees the representation of the University in judicial and administrative proceedings.
  • Supervises and manages work performed by outside legal counsel.
  • Designs and delivers training as needed to the campus community on legal issues impacting the University's activities and operations.
  • Participates in the supervision of the response to subpoenas served upon the University.
  • Stays abreast of developments in the law that will impact the University and its operations.
  • Serves on and/or advises University committees as a representative of the Office of the General Counsel.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, professional affiliations and other means to remain informed of developments in legal matters affecting the University's activities and operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, required, or requested.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a practicing and licensed attorney.
  • Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California (or active membership in another state's bar association with the ability to obtain active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California within one year of start of employment).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience advising institutions of higher education is preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent legal advice and counsel to the University's Board of Trustees, management and other personnel on a wide range of legal issues.
  • Knowledge of the range of laws and regulations that apply to and govern the University's activities and operations.
  • Ability to navigate a wide range of legal issues in a complex organization with multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to competently and effectively evaluate information, assess alternatives, and provide sound legal advice.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with diverse individuals, both within and outside the University, including but not limited to the ability to work effectively and professionally under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Strong commitment to teamwork, effective customer service, and collaboration.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and manage the work of outside legal counsel and consultants.
  • Excellent planning, organization and time management skills, including but not limited to the ability to prioritize multiple projects under pressure.
  • Flexibility to work unpredictable hours as needed outside regular business hours.
  • Consistent and regular attendance.

Posting Salary: $11,666.67-$14,166.67 per month; Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
