Associate Lecturer in Taxation

Are you passionate about tax, taxation and teaching? Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking an Associate Lecturer to teach next Spring term 2026.

Birkbeck Business School is looking to recruit a part-time, fixed-term Associate Lecturer to teach the module:

  • Taxation
  • 13.5 hours, teaching on Friday 7.30pm-9pm
  • Spring Term, 9 weeks of teaching, Jan - August 2026.

This module provides a framework through which students can acquire an understanding of the main features of the UK tax system – Income Tax, Corporation Tax, Capital Gains Tax and VAT - from an individual and business perspective. This leads to an appreciation of the effect of taxation on personal and business decisions.

In addition, the course provides an understanding of the main economic and social considerations in the design of the UK tax system.

The aim of this course is to explore and develop themes to achieve a deeper appreciation of the theoretical and practical issues associated with selected taxation topics and stimulate a critical evaluation of taxation policy used in those topic areas.

In particular, the course aims for students to:

  • develop an understanding, from an historical perspective, of the role of political economy in UK taxation.
  • develop an appreciation of the economic, legal and accounting aspects of taxation.
  • develop a working knowledge of those areas of taxation of most current practical importance.
  • develop analytical and problem-solving abilities in making tax planning decisions.
  • appreciate the inter-relationship of different taxes and their effects on business decisions.
  • develop technical expertise to produce tax computations.

If you have knowledge in these areas, and you are an excellent and innovative teacher with a track record of student engagement, and want to contribute to an impactful educational experience - apply with us at Birkbeck today.

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract:

Fixed-term, January - August 2026, part-time contract. Please submit an application form for consideration.

Interview date: Thursday 16 October 2025.
