Associate Lecturer - International Negotiations & Conflict Resolution

Birkbeck, University of London, is looking to recruit a part-time, fixed-term Associate Lecturer to teach this summer term 2026.

Joining the School of Social Sciences, as Associate Lecturer, you would teach on the following module:

  • International Negotiations and Conflict Resolution.
  • 15 hours of contact time.
  • Summer term 2026.

We are seeking an Associate Lecturer to support teaching for the module International Negotiations and Conflict Resolution, with a particular focus on an intensive, simulation-based teaching week.

You will work closely with the module convenor (Senior Lecturer) to help design, deliver, and oversee a structured negotiation/mediation simulation that develops students’ practical skills in negotiation strategy, communication, and conflict resolution.

Key responsibilities:

  • Co-design and refine the structure, roles, materials, and assessment approach for the negotiation simulation alongside the Senior Lecturer.
  • Co-facilitate and oversee one week of intensive negotiations simulations, supporting student preparation, role immersion, process management, and debriefing.
  • Provide academic guidance during the simulation week, including coaching on negotiation tactics, mediation techniques, and conflict analysis as appropriate.
  • Contribute to assessment and marking (remote), in line with module criteria and timelines.

Teaching schedule and location:

  • Must be available to teach between 6-9pm during one intensive week of negotiations simulations (Monday 1 June to Friday 5 June 2026).
  • Preparatory work and marking can be completed remotely or on campus.

To succeed as Associate Lecturer, you will have:

  • Demonstrable experience teaching and/or running negotiation, mediation, or conflict resolution simulations (in higher education or professional training contexts), and/or professional experience in diplomacy or negotiation/mediation.
  • Ability to facilitate structured, inclusive, and supportive learning in a live, high-engagement simulation environment.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to manage group dynamics and guide reflective debriefs.

Desirable:

  • Expertise in specific peace process case studies or comparative issues (e.g., ceasefire negotiations, power-sharing arrangements, transitional justice).
  • Experience assessing skills-based learning or reflective written work linked to simulations.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engaged educator or practitioner to contribute to an applied, skills-oriented module and to work collaboratively on innovative teaching design - apply with us at Birkbeck today.

Remuneration: Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked.

This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract: Fixed-term April - July 2026, part-time contract. Please submit a CV and statement for consideration. Closing date: Monday, 2 February 2026, interview date: Monday, 9 February 2026.

Enquiries: If you would like to know more about the role, please contact Dr Jasmine Bhatia, at jasmine.bhatia@bbk.ac.uk.
