Associate or Full Professor (Clinical) - Respirologist

The McGill University Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time Respirologist position at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor (Clinical). The position is intended for a Clinician-Scientist working in the field of tuberculosis. The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This is a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Department of Medicine is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.

Job Duties: Please see the Department of Medicine (DOM) website for McGill DOM Career path definitions. Our career path definitions specify typical ranges of time allotted to clinical work, teaching (clinical and didactic), research and administration.

As a Clinician-Scientist, the candidate will be expected to spend a minimum of 50% of their time dedicated to research and develop and maintain an independent and productive research program. The research program is expected to attract external peer reviewed funding (e.g. Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Fonds de Recherche Québec—Santé). Internal startup funding may be available on a competitive basis to a suitable candidate.

Specific clinical duties within the Respiratory Division will include outpatient and inpatient care of people with tuberculosis at the various sites of the McGill University Health Centre. The successful candidate’s clinical work will also encompass more general inpatient and outpatient respirology duties at the Montreal Chest Institute/Royal Victoria Hospital (Glen), the Montreal General Hospital, and the Lachine Hospital sites of the McGill University Health Centre. This will involve attending on clinical services such as the inpatient consultation service, respiratory ward, or day hospital. Certification for working in the respiratory/weaning ICU will be considered an asset.

The successful candidate will be expected to lead an original and impactful research program in collaboration with other members of the Department and the Research Institute of the MUHC. Prior experience with international work in tuberculosis, the ability to analyze large population datasets, and expertise in the use of artificial intelligence are highly desirable attributes for this position.

The incumbent will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

All McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Hold an MD degree and be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent) in Respirology;
  • Be eligible for licensure in Quebec;
  • Hold, or be eligible for, certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec;
  • Training and certification in Critical Care will be considered an asset;
  • Hold advanced research training;
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.

Job Details: Faculty/Department/Unit: Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Department of Medicine, Division of Respirology. Employee Type: Contract Academic Staff ('Academic Contractual'). Rank: Associate/Full Professor. Salary: Remuneration will be according to Quebec health care fee schedule. Job Status: Full-time.
