Position (Job Purpose)
To conduct teaching, research and service to contribute to HBKU becoming a world-class research university and collaborate with faculty members and students to create a vibrant university community that will positively impact and contribute to the development of Qatar and the region by advancing knowledge in their field and developing human capacity through their teaching. And to serve as research faculty in Master of Arts (MA) in Counseling [Islamic] Psychology, this program is uniquely offered within an Islamically integrated framework.
Job Description
- Conduct assigned courses or seminars to contribute to student learning
- Supervise independent study activities to guide students in achieving their academic and professional goals
- Serve as academic advisor to students to guide them in course and theses selection.
- Participate, Serve on, and chair university and College committees in the evaluation and promotion of faculty.
- Render service to the professional or lay community relevant to academic specialty.
- Direct research programs of undergraduate/graduate students and advise on research matters.
- Conduct research in the field of specialization and publish findings in scholarly journals or books.
- May serve on faculty committees dealing with such matters as curriculum planning and degree requirements, and perform a variety of administrative duties.
- Participate in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods to further improve the university/college teaching material.
- Conduct research or undertake comparable scholarly activity to contribute to HBKU becoming a leading research university.
- Disseminate key research findings through publications, conferences and scholarly presentations to aid in making HBKU a reputable university.
- Supervise research projects and theses to ensure success of research projects and students.
- Seek funding support for research to help make HBKU a world-class research university.
- Other reasonable tasks as assigned by supervisor
Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Ph.D. or terminal degree from an accredited university as required for teaching in certain fields
- 6-8 years of relevant full-time university teaching experience in research, higher education, or closely related areas in the industry (additional experience may be required to show equivalency), with evidence of increasing professional maturity and productivity.
- Good evidence of proficiency in teaching, student supervision, and curriculum and program development.
- Research and scholarly achievements judged competent and adequate for the rank of Associate Professor in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities.
- Good evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization.
- Growing portfolio of scholarly endeavors (funded research grants, publications, IP/patents, etc.) in comparison with peers active in the same field at a major research university.
- Good evidence for an increasing regional and international reputation in the scholarly discipline
- Ability to work with and ability to include diverse groups, cultures and communities
- Participation to develop networks and collaboration within HBKU, and with program partners and branch campuses in both teaching and research activities.
Additional Requirements/Skills
- Teach courses in the counseling psychology program, some of the courses needed to be taught by the new faculty includes, but not limited to: Career/Vocational Counseling, School Counseling, Marital and Family Therapy (from an Islamically integrated approach), Group Therapy
- Teach all courses within from an Islamically integrated perspective
- Conducting research on topics related to Islamic psychology and Muslim mental health
- Publish at least two Scopus indexed publications each year
- Supervise student theses
- Supervise student’s clinical work at the CIS Psychology Clinic
- Offer limited clinical psychological services at the CIS Psychology Clinic
- Mentor student’s professional and spiritual growth
- It aspires to fill an urgent need for more trained mental health practitioners who are cognizant and capable of effectively integrating the religious sensitivities of Muslim populations into mental health care treatment.
- Train Students within a curriculum structure that is consistent with international competency standards for mental health practitioners for potential licensure anywhere in the world.
- Provide unique training opportunities to build student’s clinical experience—both on-site at the psychology training clinic housed within CIS as well as off-site through the program’s external mental healthcare partners.
