Associate Professor in Economics
About the position
The Department of Economics is looking for an Associate Professor in Economics. The department's employees are active in the international research community and publish research at a high academic level within a broad range of disciplinary areas. You will become part of an ambitious and inclusive academic work environment, consisting of 26 academic staff, 700 students and three administrative staff. We are seeking a candidate with strong academic qualifications who is eager to contribute to the development of the department in close collaboration with colleagues at the department.
Duties of the position
As an Associate Professor at the Department of Economics you will:
- Conduct your own research
- Contribute to the development of the department's research activities
- Publish research in leading international journals and convey findings both in academia and to the general public
- Apply for external funding for research projects
- Teach and assess/grade exams in a broad range of courses at both bachelor’s and master’s levels, including courses outside your primary area of specialization
- Supervise students at bachelor’s, master`s and PhD levels
- Contribute to the development of the department’s study programs and promote the use of varied teaching and assessment methods
- Carry out relevant academic administrative tasks
Required qualifications
You must have the following qualifications required for the position of associate professor:
- A doctoral degree in Economics, or competence at an equivalent level documented by scientific work
- Educational competence
- Norwegian language skills at level B2
- Be able to document recent publications in Economics or Finance, and a potential for future research at a high academic level
You are expected to show a conscious and reflective attitude in activities related to teaching and supervision. You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the NTNUs guidelines for academic positions. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment are required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level B2 of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.
If you can document that your doctoral thesis has been submitted, your application may be considered even if you have not yet defended it. The PhD must, however, be awarded before you can take up the position.
Preferred qualifications
It is advantageous if you have:
- Teaching experience from university or college level
- Ability to engage and involve the students in your teaching activities
- Experience in student supervision
- Experience with, and an ability to, initiate and obtain external funding for research projects
- Experience and abilities in academic networking
Personal qualities

Salary and conditions
As Associate Professor (code 1011) you are normally paid from gross NOK 700,000 – NOK 775,000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and NOK 400 for funds for organizational development initiatives. The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology.
