Associate Professor in Evolutionary Genetics
The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Evolutionary Genetics. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.
We seek candidates who conduct conceptually driven research using cutting edge genomic technologies, computational methods, experimental, and field-based approaches to study fundamental questions in evolutionary genetics of fish, with particular emphasis on hybridization, adaptive introgression, speciation, and the genetic basis of adaptation. We are especially interested in candidates whose research investigates the evolutionary consequences of gene flow between species, genetic incompatibilities, and the role of hybridization in generating biodiversity in North American fishes. We seek applications from candidates whose research program complements the research programs of the highly collaborative faculty currently in the department, specifically by bridging molecular mechanisms with evolutionary processes in natural populations, and integrates with our existing group in aquatic systems.
The successful candidate must have a PhD in evolutionary biology, genetics, or genomics with a clearly demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, strong endorsements by referees, and the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below).
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Strong links exist between the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Royal Ontario Museum, the Department of Cell and Systems Biology, the Centre for Global Change Science, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, the School of the Environment, the University network of leading academic research hospitals (http://www.uhn.ca/, http://sunnybrook.ca/) and research groups with provincial and federal government agencies. The University owns a nearby field station dedicated to ecological research (the Koffler Scientific Reserve; http://www.ksr.utoronto.ca/). Toronto is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, one of the most desirable in the world in which to work and live.
Applicants must submit: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, teaching dossier consisting of: a teaching statement highlighting previous experience, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities, three representative publications or working papers.
Equity, diversity and inclusion are essential to academic excellence as articulated in University of Toronto’s Statement on Equity, Diversity and Excellence. We seek candidates who share these values and who demonstrate throughout the application materials their commitment and efforts to advance equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.
