Associate Professor in Islamic Studies
Position (Job Purpose)
The College of Islamic Studies (CIS) provides a unique platform that contributes to critical intellectual debates on Islam in a global context, through its blended academic programs and an immersive learning experience; as well as its distinguished research division, which includes several research centers and clusters.
Job Description
- Conduct assigned courses or seminars to contribute to student learning
- Supervise independent study activities to guide students in achieving their academic and professional goals
- Serve as academic advisor to students to guide them in course and theses selection.
- Participate, Serve on, and chair university and College committees in the evaluation and promotion of faculty.
- Render service to the professional or lay community relevant to academic specialty.
- Direct research programs of undergraduate/graduate students and advise on research matters.
- Conduct research in the field of specialization and publish findings in scholarly journals or books.
- May serve on faculty committees dealing with such matters as curriculum planning and degree requirements, and perform a variety of administrative duties.
- Participate in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods to further improve the university/college teaching material.
- Conduct research or undertake comparable scholarly activity to contribute to HBKU becoming a leading research university.
- Disseminate key research findings through publications, conferences and scholarly presentations to aid in making HBKU a reputable university.
- Supervise research projects and theses to ensure success of research projects and students.
- Seek funding support for research to help make HBKU a world-class research university.
- Other reasonable tasks as assigned by supervisor
Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience
PhD or terminal degree from an accredited university that emphasizes applied modalities in the fields of politics and international relations.
6-8 years of relevant full-time university teaching experience in research, higher education, or closely related areas in the industry (additional experience may be required to show equivalency), with evidence of increasing professional maturity and productivity
Evidence of proficiency and success in teaching, student supervision, and curriculum and program development
Research and scholarly achievements deemed competent and adequate for the relevant rank in comparison with peers active in the same field at a major research university.
Applicants must possess a proven track record of scholarly research and teaching in Islamic studies, global affairs, politics, and international relations preferably in humanitarian work, peace, conflict resolution, and Middle Eastern studies. This role requires a deep understanding of the complexities of Muslim societies and their interactions on the global stage, ideally supported by published work and participation in international academic forums
Significant national, regional, and international reputation in scholarly endeavors (funded research grants, publications, etc.) in comparison with peers active in the same field at a major research university
Ability to work with and lead diverse groups, cultures, and communities.
Evidence of significant national, regional, and international networks and collaborations in both teaching and research activities.
Bilingual proficiency in Arabic and English is essential and the primary language of instruction is English.
Additional Requirements/Skills
- Specialize in research methodology within the field.
- Teach in the MA in Islam and Global Affairs program.
- Contribute to research initiatives and publications in reputable journals.
- Engage with relevant stakeholders in Qatar and the region.
- Have the ability to assume administrative roles.
