Offer Description
Background of the recruitment and description of the project
Institute for Protein Research (IPR) is a research institute that conducts groundbreaking life science research based on the structure and function of proteins, using creative approaches and innovative technologies. As a Joint-Usage/Research Center, IPR also contributes to the scientific community by promoting collaborative research activities with domestic and international researchers. To develop above-mentioned activities as well as to explore novel areas of life science research, IPR is seeking for a successful researcher to fill a staff position in the Laboratory for Membrane Systems Biology.
The Laboratory for Membrane Systems Biology at this institute explores biological membranes that constitute cells and organelles. Biological membranes are known to be composed of a diverse array of several thousand to tens of thousands of distinct lipid species; however, in living cells, many aspects remain unclear regarding how these lipid molecules cooperate and function together with surrounding lipids and membrane proteins. The laboratory is developing large-scale screening and directed evolution of lipid-binding probes based on the CLiB (Cell surface Liposome Binding) assay, a unique technology to analyze protein–lipid interactions on the surface of yeast cells. In addition, the lab is conducting cutting-edge research by combining imaging-based analyses of the dynamics of intracellular organelle membranes, docking simulations using AlphaFold, and machine learning/AI analyses that leverage large-scale datasets.
The laboratory is seeking a highly motivated staff member who can provide leadership in ongoing projects. Candidates who are expected to complete their PhD by the start date are expected to acquire new experimental techniques, while candidates with several years of postdoctoral research experience are expected to play a central role in our laboratory’s projects on biological membrane research, making full use of their previous research experience.
