Overview:

- Full-time, ongoing role within RMIT’s School of Computing Technologies (Data Science & AI).
- Appointment will be made at Academic Level D (Associate Professor) ($176,883 - $194,866 p.a.) or Academic Level E (Professor) ($227,847 p.a.) + 17% Super, commensurate with experience and track record.

RMIT is seeking an outstanding academic in Generative AI to join a growing and ambitious research environment focused on advancing AI research and translating it into real-world outcomes.
This is an exciting opportunity for a high-performing researcher and academic leader to contribute to a discipline with strong momentum and a strategic focus on AI innovation, research excellence, and industry engagement.
We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in:
- Generative AI
- Agentic AI
- Multi-modal Machine Learning
- Small Language Models / efficient language models
- Responsible, ethical and trustworthy AI
The role offers the opportunity to build collaborations across RMIT and with national and global partners, while contributing to the RAIsE Hub — RMIT’s AI innovation platform connecting research, education and industry to deliver real-world impact.
About You
You are a high-performing academic with a strong research profile, collaborative mindset, and commitment to excellence in research and teaching.
Level D: Strong research track record, funding success, and emerging or established international profile, with experience mentoring staff and contributing to academic leadership.
Level E: Internationally recognised leader with a proven ability to shape research agendas, lead major initiatives, and deliver strategic impact.
Across both levels, you will contribute to research leadership, teaching innovation, HDR supervision, partnerships, and academic governance.
What you’ll do
- Lead excellence in research, teaching and engagement
- Shape AI and Data Science programs and drive curriculum innovation
- Build impactful research programs, publish in leading venues, and secure funding
- Supervise and mentor HDR candidates and academic staff
- Strengthen national and global collaborations
- Contribute to the School and College’s strategic direction
Level E appointment will also lead major initiatives, research centres or large-scale programs.
To be successful in this position, you’ll have:
- A strong track record of high-quality research outputs in leading venues
- Demonstrated success in securing external research funding
- Experience supervising higher degree by research candidates
- Proven ability in curriculum development, teaching excellence and program review
- Strong leadership, collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills
- Excellent communication skills across academic, industry and executive audiences
- A commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion
In addition:
- Level D: Nationally recognised with an emerging or established international profile
- Level E: Internationally recognised authority with a strong record of strategic leadership and impact
Qualifications
Mandatory: PhD in a relevant field
