Associate Research Scientist (All Animals Initiative & WATR Lab)
This role will lead and/or collaborate on research on aquatic animal welfare and interdisciplinary science within the WATR-lab, co-managing All Animals Initiative. Key responsibilities include conducting research, writing grants, and assisting with strategic planning and coordination across scholarship, outreach, and artistic programming. The expected workload is approximately 2 days/week, including regularly scheduled lab meetings, program meetings, and strategic planning meetings.
Key Responsibilities
- Research (WATR-lab)
- Design and execute studies on aquatic animal welfare, wild animal welfare, and climate-animal intersections.
- Maintain high standards for research ethics in alignment with Just Animal Welfare Science.
- Produce manuscripts, manage special issues, and collaborate on high-impact publications.
- Grant Writing & Fundraising (All Animals Initiative)
- Lead or support grant writing efforts (e.g., CEAP proposals).
- Identify new funding sources and co-develop applications with team.
- Manage awarded grants through reporting and liaising with funders.
- Initiative Coordination & Visioning (All Animals Initiative)
- Lead strategic planning alongside Professor Franks and team.
- Serve as Associate Director: oversee logistics, partnerships, programming milestones.
Contract Details and Timeline
Start date: as early as September 2025 (pending administrative setup).
Initial funding secured to January/February, renewal contingent on successful fundraising.
Part-time expectations (2 days/week; flexible based on project needs).
Salary Range
Hourly rate between $40–$50/hr, based on funding availability.
Minimum Qualifications
- Advanced degree in animal welfare science, animal behavior, environmental studies, or related field.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage cross-functional projects.
Preferred Qualifications/Skills
- Proven experience with aquatic or wild-animal research and ethics methodology.
- Strong grant writing and fundraising track record.
