About the Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry conducts research across all core areas of chemistry with a strong focus on contributing to a sustainable society. The department comprises three main units:

  • Center for Molecular Protein Science (CMPS)
  • Center for Analysis and Synthesis (CAS)
  • Division of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry

Analytical chemistry education and research are primarily hosted within CAS, which includes around 15 research groups working across organic, inorganic, analytical, and materials chemistry, as well as polymer technology.

The department benefits from close links to world-class research infrastructures, including MAX IV and the European Spallation Source (ESS), and provides excellent access to advanced facilities such as mass spectrometry, ICP-MS, NMR, electron microscopy, cleanrooms, synthesis laboratories, and high-performance computing resources.

The Position

Lund University invites applications for a six-year tenure-track position as Associate Senior Lecturer in Analytical Chemistry. The position is designed to support early-career researchers in establishing an independent academic profile, with a clear pathway to promotion to Senior Lecturer (permanent) and eventually Professor.

Applicants with research interests across the full breadth of analytical chemistry are encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities

The position includes research, teaching, and limited administrative duties:

  • Establish and lead an independent research program in analytical chemistry
  • Build a research group, supported by resources equivalent to at least one doctoral studentship
  • Actively seek external research funding
  • Teach at the first, second, and third cycles (approximately 10–30% over the employment period)
  • Supervise bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students
  • Contribute to departmental and faculty activities

The balance between research and teaching may evolve over time.

Qualification Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Hold a PhD in Analytical Chemistry (or equivalent expertise)
  • Normally have obtained the PhD within seven years of the application deadline (earlier degrees may be considered under special circumstances)
  • Have completed a postdoctoral stay or equivalent experience at an institution other than the PhD-granting university
  • Demonstrate suitability for academic duties in research and teaching

Assessment Criteria

Primary emphasis is placed on research excellence, with teaching expertise also considered.

Required:

  • Strong publication record in analytical chemistry
  • A well-defined research plan demonstrating independence and funding potential
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Ability to plan, develop, and deliver teaching in analytical chemistry

Meritorious:

  • Ability to complement and strengthen existing research and education
  • Evidence of research renewal and leadership
  • Experience obtaining external funding
  • Teaching experience in analytical chemistry, particularly analytical chromatography
  • Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills

Promotion

An Associate Senior Lecturer may apply once for promotion to Senior Lecturer (permanent position), subject to meeting the Faculty of Science’s promotion criteria.
