Associate Tutors in Psychology

The University of Surrey Clinical Psychology Doctorate (PsychD) is pleased to advertise for Associate Tutors (Clinical) to join the programme team. You will be making a significant contribution to the profession through supporting Trainee Clinical Psychologists at an important developmental stage.

Associate Tutors support the programme by monitoring the clinical and professional development of a small consistent group of trainees across their three years on training. This involves twice-yearly mid placement reviews, and twice-yearly end of placement meetings, where all aspects of competency development on placement are discussed. These meetings take place remotely. Associate Tutors then provide regular feedback at meetings with the programme team at least twice a year. The majority of these meetings are held remotely.

This is an excellent opportunity for personal and professional development. Training is provided in the first year in post, and a range of CPD opportunities will be available. The role will specifically involve supporting a group of 4-5 trainees during their time on the programme. For the first year in this role this will require approximately 73 or 85 hours (depending on whether 4 or 5 trainees are taken on), dropping to approximately 65 or 77 hours respectively for the remaining time in role.

The initial appointment will be for a one-year period, but it is anticipated that successful applicants will be available for at least three years to follow a cohort of trainees through the programme.

Applications are welcome from HCPC registered Clinical and Counselling Psychologists, with a minimum of two years post-qualification experience across a broad range of areas, including clinical or consultative work within the NHS, third sector or social care organisations, or clinically-related research or policy roles. Applicants will need to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and an interest in supporting the development of Trainee Clinical Psychologists. Experience of supervising Trainee Clinical Psychologists will be an advantage. A flexible approach to working will be required but Associates have the ability to arrange most meetings at a time that is mutually convenient for them and trainees.

The PsychD Programme is based in the School of Psychology at the University of Surrey which has an outstanding reputation for applied psychology professional training and research. The team are a welcoming, innovative and cohesive group, with a wide variety of special interests and expertise in training. The team are committed to anti-oppressive practice, the ongoing work of decolonising, and reflection. We welcome applications from people from a wide range of social backgrounds, as part of ongoing efforts to diversify the profession.

To apply please submit your CV and a cover letter via our website outlining why you see yourself as suitable for the role. If you wish to have an informal discussion about the post please contact Dr Jen Mance, Clinical Director: j.mance@surrey.ac.uk or Mary John, Head of Discipline: m.john@surrey.ac.uk. Interviews will be held online via MS Teams on 30th September.
