Advertised Job Summary:
The Department of History and the Center for American Civic Leadership and Public Discourse, an academic center in the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Carolina invite applications to fill a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of History, to begin August 16, 2027. The successful candidate will be appointed in the Department of History.
Applications are invited from scholars working in the political thought and legal history of the Early American Republic, 1789-1840. We especially encourage candidates with expertise in areas such as early national jurisprudence, civic cultures, or American political development. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to teach courses on the History of the Early Republic, Republicanism and Constitutional Thought, and the American founding documents. The successful candidate is expected to prioritize commitment to the Center's mission as described below.
The Center for American Civic Leadership and Public Discourse promotes the dialogic, cultural, and civic literacies which are essential to a well-ordered and flourishing American polity. This means educating for knowledge of American history and civics, cultivation of a life-long love of learning, and an understanding and appreciation of our founding documents, and the philosophic, political, literary, and religious traditions out of which they emerged. The Department of History is home to 30+ faculty and 50+ graduate students, over 300 undergraduate majors, and is in Gambrell Hall. Required Education and Experience:
- Candidates must have a PhD in History or closely related field at the time of appointment, and a strong research and teaching agenda.
- Applicants should present evidence of a strong scholarly record and expertise to teach introductory and advanced undergraduate courses and graduate level courses in their area of expertise.
