TEMPORARY END DATE: This position is temporary and ends on or before June 30, 2026. Any continuation beyond June 30, 2026 is contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funding.

FT/PT: Full-time

PAY PLAN: 12-month

WORKPLACE TYPE: On-site (work in-person at business location)

ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $4,584 - $4,750. However, offer amount will be commensurate with candidate's experience, education, skills, and training.

CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE: $4,584 - $8,884

POSITION PURPOSE: Under general direction of the Director of Athletics, the Athletic Trainer II performs the full range of athletic training functions for student-athletes to support the prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and overall wellness during training and competition in accordance with the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) guidelines. The Athletic Trainer II makes clinical judgements regarding injuries and treatment, is involved in the development and coordination of the sports medicine program and serves as a contact for key programs within the Sports Medicine department including external healthcare partnerships, collaboration with Strength and Condition staff, and nutrition support with the campus dietician. The Athletic Trainer II also contributes to department operations by assisting with supply management, insurance processes, intern training, and policy development. The position will receive technical direction from the Director of the Student Health Services on medical charting, peer review, privileging/credentialing, medical releases, and HIPAA compliance.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Diagnosis & Rehabilitation of Athletic & Non-Athletic Injuries

  • Prevent, recognize, and assess athletic injuries.
  • Develop, administer, and implement preventive and rehabilitation programs to treat athletic injuries using the appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments in accordance with physician orders including, but not limited to, heat, cold, light, sound, electricity and rehabilitation and exercise equipment and apply bandages, tapes, and braces to prevent and treat injuries.
  • Assist in designing conditioning programs to prevent injuries.
  • Regularly evaluate the physical condition and overall health and well-being of student athlete.
  • Facilitate medical referrals for student-athletes to medical specialists as needed, ensuring the student has necessary insurance documentation to support insurance claims and processing.
  • Inform coaching staff and other health professionals on the status of injuries and treatment plans.
  • Advise student athletes on how to prevent injuries and maintain their physical condition.
  • Counsel student athletes and coaches regarding rehabilitation and treatment plans.
  • Attend practices and athletics events and provide medical emergency coverage to student athletes.
  • Travel with sports teams to away games as needed.
  • Provide one (1) hour per week of athletic training services to students (non-athletes) in the SHS space.

Coordination of Treatment, Training Programs, & Prevention Programs

  • Schedule and assign student-athletes time for rehabilitation or treatment.
  • May provide access to over-the-counter medication for student athletes in accordance with physician direction, applicable university policy and legal guidelines and ensuring required documentation.
  • Coordinate drug prevention and supplement education programs for student athletes.
  • Assist with coordination and communication with Mental Health Liaison for mental health resources and care.
  • Support the department leadership efforts in relation to mentorship of training staff through continuing education, industry best practices, certifications, and modalities.
  • Serve as a liaison with the campus registered dietician; coordinate and plan nutritional education and support for student-athletes and sports programs; and identify community partners for nutritional resources through gift-in-kind donations.
  • Serve as a liaison with Strength and Conditioning staff and identify best practices for integrated Sports Medicine and Sports Performance strategies to support the overall health and wellbeing of student-athletes.

Administrative Duties

  • Complying with HIPAA, maintain appropriate medical records of injuries treatment plans, progress, and dispensing of over-the-counter medications.
  • Communicate with appropriate athletic trainers and coaches regarding respective team's injury reports.
  • Assist administrative support staff with insurance claim submission, tracking, and reconciliation.
  • Perform inventory tracking of medical supplies and assist with ordering as needed for Athletics and the SHS.
  • Participate in quarterly peer reviews by evaluating five (5) charts of the other trainers in the sports medicine department based on the peer review scoring sheet.
  • Maintain continuing education units for current certification requirements.
  • Provide all materials/records needed to demonstrate credentials are up to date (certification, CPR) and meet guidelines to renew privileges such as scoring 90% on peer quarterly peer review.
  • Assist in writing, revising, and enforcing various CSUB Sports Medicine Policies.
  • Manage master calendar for athletic competitions.
  • Maintain equipment and cleanliness of athletic training and rehabilitation facilities.
  • Assist with annual equipment calibrations for specific athletic training room equipment and machines.
  • Assist with training student interns; collect, review, and submit all related policies and procedures to the QI Chair; ensure compliance with established protocols; and develop and maintain observation schedules.
  • Conduct and document required monthly AED checks and assist in the review and implementation of Emergency Action Plans.
  • Contribute to maintaining a current list of specialized off-campus care providers; identify gaps in service needs beyond the Athletic Training scope; and cultivate, steward, and expand relationships to ensure adequate referral resources.
  • Continuously track trends and updates in the healthcare industry, including NCAA and NATA recommendations, to align external provider resources with current best practices.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE - Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited sports medicine program in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology, or related field and equivalent to two (2) years of experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer in a high school or college environment.

LICENSES -

  • Must possess and maintain National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) & Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainer.
  • Must possess and maintain CPR/AED Certification.
  • Possession of a driver's license or ability to obtain by the date of hire.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA's) - Regular and reliable attendance is required. Full to advanced knowledge of principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in athletic training.
  • Previous experience with collegiate and/or professional athletes.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: MEDIUM WORK - up to 40% of the activities involve sitting, standing, squatting, kneeling or walking; lifting heavy weight objects limited to 50 pounds; may involve pushing and pulling objects within the weight limits.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Is exposed to excessive noise, around moving machinery, marked changes in temperature and/or humidity, dust, fumes, gases, or radiation, microwave. Drives motorized equipment. Other: Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and hazardous materials.
