AY26 American Indian Studies Teaching Specialist or Lecturer

About the Job

The Department of American Indian Studies in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota occasionally needs teaching specialists or lecturers to teach courses that cannot be staffed by regular faculty. The courses are primarily introductory or survey courses. Appointments may be full-time or part-time and may be limited to one semester.

This does not constitute a posting for vacancies but establishes a pool of applicants should openings occur during the coming academic year. Applicants will be selected from this pool on an as-needed basis through the academic year. Appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

Job Duties:

  • Develop and teach courses
  • Advise students regarding both specific coursework and broader academic or career goals
  • Provide service through participation in governance of the department and/or the University
  • Continue personal growth within the profession, keep current with the field, and broaden knowledge and expertise
  • Contribute to outreach activities that support the unit’s mission.

Teaching Specialists’ Hiring Criteria

American Indian Studies is flexible with its degree requirements. Other important hiring criteria include academic training, prior teaching experience, and relevant life or professional experience.

Lecturers’ Hiring Criteria

American Indian Studies is flexible with its degree requirements, but in order to be hired at the Lecturer level, you will need to have a Ph.D. Other important hiring criteria include academic training, prior teaching experience, and relevant life or professional experience.

Compensable Factors

  • Professional experience that provides basis for subject expertise
  • Ability to master subject matter and communicate it in organized and coherent manner around a subject matter
  • Difficulty in finding the right skills and expertise

American Indian Studies will apply these compensable factors when the need arises and as a way to justify differences in pay when appropriate. The department is responsible for the use of these practices.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range:

AIS Teaching Specialists are paid on a per credit basis as follows:
Undergraduate credit courses: $3,000-$3,667 per credit; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
Undergraduate credit courses: $9,000-$11,000 per course; depending on education/qualifications/experience.

AIS Lecturers are paid on a per credit basis as follows:
Undergraduate credit courses: $3,334-$4,000 per credit; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
Undergraduate credit courses: $10,000-$12,000 per course; depending on education/qualifications/experience.

Retirement plan options are available for Civil Service, Faculty, Labor-Represented, Professional & Administrative, and Temp Casual classifications. Learn more about retirement plans.

This approach ensures that compensation reflects the value and unique contributions of each candidate while maintaining equity within our organization.
