Bacteriophages to treat bacterial infections

Applications accepted all year round
Self-Funded PhD Students Only

About the Project

Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria, playing vital roles in shaping microbial communities and influencing health and disease. They are powerful natural tools for combating antimicrobial resistance, advancing biotechnology and understanding fundamental biology.

At the Becky Mayer Centre for Phage Research (BMCPR) a multidisciplinary team of more than 40 researchers work together to solve current and future global challenges.  The centre offers a collaborative and inclusive research culture, providing an environment for discovery, innovation and training. The centre provides an extensive phage-bacteria biobank, state-of-the-art experimental systems (in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo) and established links with clinicians.

We currently offer PhD self-funded research projects to cover all aspects of phage biology from fundamental biology through to translational phage therapy. Including exploitation of phage derived products (eg Endolysins) and understanding the role of phage in respiratory diseases.

For more information on specific project areas, please contact the relevant Principal Investigators:

  • Urinary and gut infections – Prof. Martha Clokie
  • Skin infections – Prof. Ed Galyov
  • Respiratory infections – Dr Spyridon Megremis
  • Genetic engineering and phage genomics – Dr Andrew Millard

For phage specific projects not in the above areas email centre4phageresearch@le.ac.uk and will identify the most suitable supervisor.

Training: Training will be project specific, with expertise in in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo models, phage isolation, phage characterisation, genome sequencing, protein expression, bioinformatics**.
