Benefits Specialist
Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
Support the benefits team on a daily basis in regards to transactions relating to health, welfare, retirement and leaves.
Answers questions and researches issues raised by employees, supervisors and application of HCC benefits policies and procedures, state and federal regulations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Process new benefit enrollments, status changes, maintain and update system of record for specific benefit programs, and prepare reconciliations for supplemental benefit plans.
Compile benefit packets for new hire orientations, assist new employees in completion of benefit forms and follow up regarding outstanding forms and information.
Review and enter ERS health and welfare benefits for new hires, family status changes and TSA and supplemental benefit elections and changes.
Ensure accuracy of benefit transactions, assure compliance with applicable laws and regulations and maintain an accurate database of benefit coverage, monitoring benefit enrollments, changes and payroll deductions.
Process and complete data entry of incoming requests to confirm separation for part-time retirement plans and college bereavement acknowledgements.
Participate in planning and coordinating periodic benefits open enrollment programs and other benefit events (i.e., employee education benefit fairs and wellness fairs for all faculty staff) including development of content materials.
Provide top-level customer service by assisting employees with questions regarding benefits and leaves, electronically distribute regulatory notices and maintain scanning of documents to the electric filing system.
Maintain electronic and hardcopy files and bulk mailings.
Recommend process improvements and monitor customer feedback as a means of enhancing service responsiveness.
Monitor Family Medical Leave application and approval process.
Provide front desk coverage, as necessary, responding to general inquiries, taking messages and other duties as assigned.
Assist with development of procedures and other written communications to employees.
Generate system queries, analyze data in connection with benefits programs, and reconcile premiums using Excel supplemental benefits.
Perform other duties, tasks and assignments as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Associates degree in Talent Engagement, Business or related field required
- 4 years directly related experience may be considered in lieu of required degree
- 3 years work experience in an education benefits office/academic environment required
Licensing & Certification
- Valid Texas Driver License

Working Conditions
General Office. Must be able to perform all job requirements with or without reasonable accommodations; remain in a stationary position during shift; move items weighing up to 25 pounds; position self to operate job equipment; apply established protocols in a timely manner. Must access, input and retrieve information from technology devices; communicate with others to accomplish job requirements. May be required to work after hours to include weekends and holidays.
