Beyond wind! Where and why flooding and landslides amplify Tropical Cyclone risk (Ref: IRISK-26-LU-03)
About the Project
Tropical cyclones often bring not just extreme winds but damaging flooding and landslides, yet these how these hazards co-occur, potentially amplifying risk, remains poorly understood. This PhD will use satellite data and world-leading AI tools to build the first global, systematic record of TC hazards (wind, flooding, landslide), revealing where and why they co occur and how climate patterns influence them. A case study approach will unpick how combined hazards amplify losses to deliver insights crucial for insurers and support improved early warning systems. Placements are planned at the British Geological survey and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (USA).

Entry requirements:
Applicants must already have, or expect to shortly graduate with, a very good undergraduate degree or Master’s degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree) – or an equivalent international qualification from a high ranking university – in a relevant subject. EU and Overseas applicants should achieve an IELTS score of 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each competency.

Funding information:
This UKRI studentship is for 3.5 years and provides a tax-free stipend of £21,805 per annum plus tuition fees at the UK rate. Excellent International candidates are eligible for a full international fee waiver however due to UKRI funding rules, no more than 30% of the studentships funded by this grant can be awarded to International candidates.
