Bioinformatics Specialist III
The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has an opening for a Bioinformatics Specialist III. This position will be responsible for using computational tools to process, transform, visualize, and analyze biological data sets in collaboration with researchers, including Linux command line bioinformatics tools like aligners (short and long read), assemblers, pipelines to process data, as well as custom scripts. Use command-line tools, scripts, and pipelines to process a variety of data types including a lot of sequencing data from NGS short reads or long reads. Use R and Python to analyze and visualize data. Execute scripts and run tools and pipelines on local Linux slurm cluster and/or cloud computing infrastructure as needed. Generate figures, graphs, and tables to help collaborators answer questions about their data (and include in publications) such as which genes are differentially expressed, at what levels, and which functional classes of genes are changing in an experiment. Create reports and presentations to organize and explain results and share them with collaborators. Help write analysis methods sections for papers and prepare data for publication, including submission to public data repositories as needed. Follow group practices to organize results and maintain productivity, ensuring code is kept separate from original data and intermediate data and organizing in a folder so that they are easily located by collaborators. Write detailed reports and well-documented code to keep projects reproducible. Meet regularly with the rest of the group and supervisor to update on progress, share knowledge, and get advice. Participate in training courses to help teach biologists’ bioinformatics skills, help troubleshoot their problems, and answer questions during and after the class. Present to the group and/or the wider institute on interesting papers, new techniques, or other emerging topics in bioinformatics or related fields to help the group and the institute keep up with new developments in the field. Part-time telecommuting permitted.
