Overview
The Biological Sciences (BIOL) PhD programme at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) combines advanced graduate coursework, laboratory research rotations, teaching assistantships, and original dissertation research. First-year candidates complete three laboratory research rotations to select a permanent dissertation research advisor, fulfill core course requirements, and complete two semesters as a teaching assistant to build key pedagogical skills.

Beginning in their second year, candidates participate continuously in departmental journal clubs and research seminars, pass written qualifying examinations, present a formal research proposal, and execute an original doctoral dissertation defended before a faculty committee. Research across the doctoral program spans core concentration areas and faculty research topics, including cell biology, developmental biology, and neurobiology; genetics, biochemistry, and microbiology; evolution, ecology, and behavior; and computational biology, bioinformatics, and systems biology.
