Job Description: Develop and improve methods to study biological processes related to food microbiology and safety. The incumbent will write research proposals, establish experimental design, and implement project protocol. Design experiments for analysis and standardization of food microbiology and safety protocols. Lead collection and analysis of data and interpret results to inform research questions and objectives. Collaborate with other researchers to create and evaluate new methods and technologies for detecting and controlling foodborne pathogens. Independently designs and executes research on the isolation and taxonomic identification of microorganisms from various citrus products and processes.
Manage laboratory activities and direct the work of other scientists, including graduate students, interns, and visiting scientists. Maintain accurate and up-to-date inventory records and material data sheets. Oversee purchase orders for supplies and equipment. Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and regulations. Evaluating new lab technologies and collaborating with vendors to ensure the laboratory has the necessary equipment and resources to conduct research.
Disseminating research results through reports, papers, and presentations. Manage cultivation and studying of live specimens, including pathogenic microorganisms. Interpret data to inform research conclusions and recommendations. Creating computational approaches for research needs, including data analysis and modeling. Collaborating with other researchers to prepare manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.
Administering biological research following specified protocols, including ensuring the safe handling of hazardous chemicals and materials. Train team members and students about research methods and techniques related to food microbiology and safety.
Writing grants and participating in fundraising for research projects.
Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Expected Salary: $53,000 - $60,000 commensurate with education and experience
Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field and seven years of experience or Master's degree in biology or a related field with five year of experience. Doctoral degree in biology or related field with two years of experience.
Preferred: Ability to independently design and conduct experiments relevant to the overall research program. Knowledge of terminology, principles, and techniques used in molecular biology, recombinant DNA, and microbiological research. Effective written communication skills for assistance in preparation of scientific manuscripts. Knowledge and ability to properly handle and maintain potentially hazardous chemicals and pathogenic microorganisms. Knowledge and skill in the use of general laboratory procedures, techniques, and equipment. Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments and experiments, including supervisory skills. Knowledge of proper data collection, computer and statistical analyses. Ability to collect, record, and analyze data using proper problem solving techniques. Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with others.
