Job Summary

Phoenix College (PC) seeks a dynamic and passionate Biology Faculty Member to provide instruction in General Microbiology (BIO 205) with the flexibility and expertise to also teach General Biology for Majors I (BIO 181) in alignment with PC's college goals and learner-centered instructional philosophy to a broad population of students. We are looking for an innovative and creative science educator dedicated to engaging students and promoting student success through the use of multiple methods and modalities of instruction, assessment, and technologies. Candidates must be adaptable, capable of working independently and collaboratively and must demonstrate a commitment to rigorous curriculum, innovative strategies for teaching and learning, service to the college/district, and professional development.

This position begins in Fall 2026.

Essential Functions

Supervises, instructs, evaluates, and monitors learning of a broad population of students in classroom, lab, online, or field settings using a variety of learning strategies, instructional technology ADA compliant course design, and current teaching methodologies appropriate to the modality. Demonstrates innovation in teaching and learning. Reviews, revises, and develops curriculum. Is available on campus to support and mentor adjunct faculty. Maintains office hours to assist, tutor, and advise students; works with students outside of the classroom on instructional activities and projects; participates in outreach activities to promote student recruitment

Develops and refines instructional materials and curriculum; develops written syllabi and course materials; assesses and evaluates knowledge of subject matter taught and monitors students' scholastic records using PC's Learning Management System (LMS); prepares and grades examinations and other learning activities.

Actively participates in service to the college that contributes to the support of student learning. Service includes involvement in district-wide, campus and departmental committees, activities, and initiatives.

Develops and enhances knowledge of subject matter taught and individual skills required to stay current with new trends and developments in the field, including attendance at conferences, courses, seminars, and/or workshops.

Minimum Qualifications

A. Master's degree or higher in a biology discipline. Biology (biological sciences, life sciences, BIO) is a basic research lab science discipline such as cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, marine biology, zoology, botany, ecology, developmental, evolutionary, neurobiology, and other disciplines or subfields approved by the Biology Instructional Council.

OR

B. Master's degree or higher in an applied biology discipline. Applied biology includes public health (epidemiology, nutrition, environmental health, biostatistics), bioengineering, biotechnology, environmental science, conservation biology, wildlife management, exercise physiology, pathology, nutrition science, and other applied biology disciplines or subfields approved by the Biology Instructional Council.

OR

C. Master's degree or higher in medicine or health care including graduate or professional degrees such as MD, DO, DDS/DMD, DPM, DVM, PA, DPT, DC, ND, MBChB or MBBS, and other health care-related disciplines approved by the Biology Instructional Council. Requires transcript evaluation by the hiring committee.

OR

D. Master's degree or higher in biology education, science education or secondary education with 18 semester graduate credits in biology and/or applied biology courses (see criteria A and B). The required 18 credits of graduate coursework may include up to 6 semester hours of science teaching methods courses. Requires transcript evaluation by the hiring committee.

Desired Qualifications

  1. PhD degree within the Biological Sciences with research experience in Microbiology, Cell, and Molecular Biology
  2. Graduate-level courses in Cell Biology, Microbiology, and/or Molecular Biology
  3. Experience teaching General Microbiology (BIO 205) and General Biology I (BIO 181) or equivalent courses at the college level, preferably within the last five (5) years.
  4. Demonstrated innovation and creativity as it relates to science education
  5. Experience designing and conducting work-based experiences (ex: Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs); service learning; internships) within the biological sciences involving undergraduate college students.
  6. Demonstrated experience contributing to academic service which includes, but is not limited to: serving on committees, community education, grant participation/involvement, and/or other academic initiatives.
  7. Experience mentoring students outside of classroom instruction.
  8. One (1) year of full-time, relevant MCCCD experience within the previous two (2) years.

Special Working Conditions

  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visa
  • Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense
  • May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
  • May be required to lift or carry up to #25 lbs
  • May be required to teach evening, weekend and/or online classes depending on needs of the Department
