Job Summary

The Center for Biostatistics in AIDS Research (CBAR), an organization within the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, is responsible for the design, monitoring and statistical analysis of clinical trials and observational studies for several major national and international NIH-funded clinical research networks. CBAR employs over 60 statisticians and epidemiologists including Harvard faculty, research scientists, and staff. Investigators within CBAR have provided statistical leadership and support for clinical research networks for thirty-five years. Currently this includes infectious disease networks such as: Advancing Clinical Therapeutics Globally for HIV/AIDS and Other Infections (ACTG) and the International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials Network (IMPAACT). Results from studies have helped to establish the paradigm for the treatment and prevention of HIV and other infectious diseases, and contributed to international treatment and prevention guidelines.

CBAR has a hybrid work environment which includes a combination of on-campus/in-person work and remote work.

This position is located in the Center for Biostatistics in AIDS Research (CBAR) within the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts. Since 1989, CBAR and the Harvard T.H. Job-Specific Responsibilities

The Center for Biostatistics in AIDS Research (CBAR) is actively recruiting a Biostatistician/Manager of Orientation position to act as a protocol statistician. This position will collaborate directly with medical researchers with minimal supervision from senior statisticians in the design, implementation, analysis, and publication of clinical trials and observational studies. The Biostatistician will also have responsibilities related to orientation.

Twenty percent (20%) of this position's time will be spent on the CBAR orientation process. The role will be responsible for the implementation and maintenance of orientation materials for new CBAR MS and PhD statisticians, epidemiologists and statistical analysts (collectively referred to as statisticians below) in CBAR clinical trials Networks. The successful applicant will provide individual oversight of training and mentoring of new statisticians for their initial introduction to CBAR work systems and for up four months after onboarding.

Specific orientation duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Compile and periodically update contents of written and electronic orientation materials provided to new hires
  • Work with new hires, supervisors, and mentors to oversee the new hire's education and evaluation of skills during the first four months of employment
  • Maintain comprehensive standardized expectations for mentors and supervisors
  • Collaborate with the CBAR Senior Associate Director of Training, the CBAR Associate Director of Biostatistics Training, the CBAR Manager of Programmer Orientation, the CBAR Manager of Orientation, and the CBAR Manager of CDISC Training in the maintenance of orientation materials, and keeping targeted areas of the CBAR web up-to-date

The remaining eighty percent (80%) of this position's time will be on clinical and observational studies of treatment for and management of HIV and its co-infections. The successful applicant will collaborate with medical researchers and senior statisticians on US and international studies involving adult or pediatric participants. Biostatistician responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Clinical and observational study development and review
  • Forms design and review
  • SDTM Modeling
  • Study Monitoring
  • Development of analysis plans
  • Development of ADaM analysis datasets, programming, analysis and report writing

The Biostatistician/Manager of Orientation will also perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, or a closely-related field required
  • 3+ years of related experience required
  • Experience with statistical software (such as SAS, Stata, etc.) required

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Two-year Master's Degree (MA/MS) program
  • Statistical experience with multi-center clinical trials, or equivalent collaborative statistical experience
  • Highly specialized and technical knowledge of statistical analysis and principles including categorical data and censored failure time data analysis
  • Advanced computer skills and experience with major statistical computing packages preferred. Experience with MS Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Experience with independently analyzing data from clinical trials using statistical techniques
  • Experience contributing to the writing of manuscripts, abstracts, and other publications documenting study findings
  • Experience in effectively collaborating with study chairs, medical officers, protocol specialists and database managers
  • Familiarity with medical terminology
  • Strong attention to detail, strong organizational skills organized, and strong written and verbal communication skills

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University's Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts.
