Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and systems.
- Knowledge and ability to install, repair, and replace steam-generating equipment and accessories.
- Ability to test and maintain boiler and steam systems in compliance with published standards, applicable codes, and established work standards.
- Thorough knowledge of the methods and principles of fire tube and water tube boilers.
- Knowledge of fire and water safety control systems.
- Demonstrated ability in working with multiple boilers and pressure vessels.
- Ability to repair, dismantle, install, or move machinery and mechanical equipment.
- Proficient in the use of hand and power tools applicable to the trade.
- Pipe fitting and gas/electric welding, brazing, or soldering skills required for steam, gas, or water service.
- Ability to interpret technical documentation accurately.
- Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
Required Minimum Training and Experience
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience in maintenance and repair of domestic high-pressure, commercial, and industrial district plant heating systems.
- Experience should include work with high-pressure multiple steam boilers with a total capacity greater than 70,000 pounds per hour of steam.
Additional Requirements
- With or without assistance, must be able to exert:
- 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally,
- 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and
- 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, job-related materials, and/or equipment.
- Must be able to:
- Climb stairs, use ladders and aerial lifts,
- Work on rooftops, from scaffolding, and high areas using appropriate harness and tether equipment,
- Use ramps and aerial lift devices above ground level, and
- Work in pits or confined spaces as needed.
- Requires the ability to discern colors accurately.
- Should operating conditions dictate, or in the event of multiple operator absences, the Boiler Mechanic will be assigned to a shift as needed.
