British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreter and Deaf Services Advisor

Join the University of Southampton Auditory Implant Service (USAIS) as a British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreter and Deaf Services Advisor and make a meaningful impact in the lives of cochlear implant users and their families. You will have a unique opportunity to further your career by using your clinical skills within a University setting allowing you to access up-to-date research in this field.

We have 2 part-time (21 hours) permanent vacant posts.

As a BSL Interpreter, you will play a vital role in supporting Deaf patients and their families throughout their cochlear implant journey—from assessment and surgery to rehabilitation and follow-up care. You’ll work closely with audiologists, rehabilitationist, ENT consultants, and other professionals to ensure clear, culturally sensitive communication at every stage.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide high-quality BSL/English interpreting for clinical appointments, assessments, and group sessions
  • Support patients and families in understanding complex medical and audiological information
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure inclusive, patient-centred care
  • Maintain accurate records and uphold confidentiality and professional standards
  • Contribute to Deaf awareness and accessibility initiatives within the Centre

What We’re Looking For

  • Registered Sign Language Interpreter with National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deafblind People (NRCPD)
  • Level 6 qualification in BSL Interpreting or postgraduate degree in interpreting
  • Experience working in healthcare or with Deaf clients in clinical settings preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
