BSN NURSING MENTOR (INSTRUCTOR - CONSULTANT)

POSITION TYPE: Independent Contractor

LOCATION: Remote/Online

CONTRACT PERIOD: Academic Year 2026-2027 (July 1, 2026 - June 30, 2027)

About to Role:

Thomas Edison State University's W. Cary Edwards School of Nursing and Health Professions seeks experienced nursing professionals/ nurse educators to serve as Academic Consultant Mentors for our BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) programs. This independent contractor position provides crucial academic support to students in our accelerated BSN and RN to BSN nursing programs through online course delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate nursing courses in online formats, including Collaborative Learning Sessions (CLS) to promote active learning and peer engagement for a minimum of 90 minutes per week during the first 7 weeks of each 8-week course term
  • Facilitate discussion forums and provide timely, substantive feedback on diverse assignments, including written papers, case studies, concept maps, media development, professional portfolios, and interactive assignments through third-party vendor platforms (interactive cases, dosage calculations, etc.)
  • Develop and review student exams and assessments using sound knowledge of test item analysis in collaboration with Program Coordinators
  • Monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback through Moodle (transitioning to Canvas)
  • Maintain weekly office hours (1 hour per week) for individual student support
  • Set and communicate Collaborative Learning Sessions (CLS) and office hour timing to students in advance
  • Participate in two collaborative course exam development meetings:
    • One scheduled during approximately week 3 of the course term
    • One scheduled during approximately week 7 of the course term
    • Dates and times mutually agreed upon with University Program Coordinators
  • Utilize AI tools appropriately to enhance student learning and streamline feedback processes
  • Submit final course grades on or before Registrar deadlines
  • Work with students approved for course extensions for 8 weeks beyond the regular term
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of all University policies, procedures, and student handbook requirements, and implement them consistently when necessary
  • Comply with "Mentoring Expectations, Terms, and Conditions" guidelines
  • Maintain professional communication with students and university staff

Technology & Professional Standards:

  • Adapt to new learning technologies as the University transitions from Moodle to Canvas
  • Stay current with AI integration best practices in nursing education
  • Maintain the highest standards of academic integrity while leveraging AI tools appropriately
  • Assess student’s assignments according to developed rubrics and grading guidelines

Communicate with the program director as needed.

Qualifications:

Required-

  • Current, unrestricted RN license (New Jersey or compact state license)
  • Master's degree in Nursing (MSN) required
  • Previous nursing teaching or mentoring experience
  • Experience working with accelerated nursing students
  • Familiarity with online course delivery formats
  • Have the ability to adapt to new technical platforms and tools quickly
  • High level of comfort with learning management systems (Canvas experience preferred)
  • Strong proficiency with educational technology and digital learning tools
  • Demonstrated commitment to upholding academic integrity and professional nursing standards
  • Ability to make difficult decisions and enforce academic policies consistently, fairly, and with compassion
  • Capacity to thoroughly learn and appropriately apply University policies and procedures
  • Strong ethical foundation aligned with nursing professional values
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including delivering constructive feedback
  • Superior organizational and time management abilities
  • Ability to work independently as a contractor

Preferred-

  • Experience facilitating collaborative learning activities or synchronous group sessions
  • Knowledge of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) (2021). The Essential: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education
  • Adult learner teaching strategies experience
  • Clinical expertise in areas relevant to BSN curriculum (Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Med-Surg, Critical Care, Community Health, Leadership, etc.)
  • Knowledge of AI tools for education (ChatGPT, Claude, AI plagiarism detection tools, etc.)
  • Experience with AI integration in educational settings (e.g., AI-assisted feedback, content creation, student support)
  • Demonstrated innovation in online teaching methodologies

Compensation:

Payment is calculated based on the number of students enrolled on the 15th day of each course:

BSNA Asynchronous Courses: $300.00 per student

BSNA Hybrid Courses: $325.00 per student

BSNA Remediation Courses: $300.00 per student

Payment is issued after final course grades are submitted at the end of each term.

Important Details:

  • This is an INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR position, not an employee role
  • Course assignments are not guaranteed during the academic year
  • University retains discretion to assign courses and may terminate agreement at any time
  • Agreement is for 2026-2027 academic year only; no presumption of renewal
  • Hybrid courses require facilitation of weekly Collaborative Learning Sessions (CLS), weekly office hours, and participation in exam development meetings (you set the timing)
  • Flexible schedule - work from anywhere with internet access
  • BSNA students are highly motivated adult learners transitioning into nursing
  • Course delivery formats vary and may include fully online or hybrid models
  • Courses feature rich, varied assessments beyond typical discussion forums
  • Mentors must uphold professional and academic standards essential for nursing licensure preparation

We're seeking seasoned nurse educators with deep clinical expertise and proven teaching experience for our online environment. The ideal candidate is a content expert who can translate complex nursing concepts into engaging, accessible learning experiences for adult learners transitioning into the profession.

Being tech-savvy and adaptable—comfortable navigating learning management systems, leveraging educational technology, and staying current with emerging tools that enhance student outcomes is a necessity. Embracing AI as a teaching enhancement tool while maintaining vigilant oversight of its appropriate use in academic work is a must. Role modeling professionalism for students transitioning into nursing is critical.
