Building Automation Systems Technician Apprentice

Job Summary

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Building Automation Systems, the Building Automation Systems Technician Apprentice is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and resolving issues with building automation systems (BAS) serving HVAC, electrical, plumbing, utilities, lighting, power, swimming pools, and miscellaneous equipment to maintain safe and comfortable environments for students, faculty, and staff and minimize utility usage.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Performance Requirements

  • Performs tasks required for the support of TCC's building automation systems in fulfilment of the requirements of the TCCD Registered Apprenticeship Program in Building Technology/Construction
  • Learns and applies safety and shop logistics practices
  • Develops aptitude necessary to identify and understand building construction concepts, construction documents, BAS architecture, BAS operations, and maintenance manuals and utility system operation
  • Develops and demonstrates knowledge and skills regarding safety procedures, basic theory, tool use, documentation, troubleshooting, code interpretation for TCC's electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems
  • Develops and demonstrates understanding of control theory, BAS input, outputs and variables, control logic, control loops, controls hardware, controls communication and calibration of BAS components
  • Develops and demonstrates understanding of measurement theory, the function of utility metering, metering best practices and communications protocols for TCC's metering systems
  • Develops and demonstrates understanding of test and balance, commissioning, data interpretation, analysis, and system interdependency in the BAS context
  • Develops and demonstrates understanding of communication protocols, the BAS and IT system interface, graphics, data trending, programming/coding, fault detection and diagnostics, measurement and verification and smart building concepts in the BAS context

Service Excellence

  • Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually, and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite
  • Completes all required training and professional development sessions sponsored through Tarrant County College (TCC)
  • Supports the mission, values, goals, and principles of the College

Supervision

This position works under the general supervision of the Senior Manager of Building Automation Systems

Performs Other Related Tasks as Required

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Within a timeframe set by the Senior Manager of Building Automation Systems, typically within 2 years, enrolls in and completes the five courses specified in the Preferred Qualification section

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one (1) completed college-level course
  • Completion or current enrollment in all or any of the five courses in this apprenticeship Related Technical Instruction (RTI) section to include:
    • HART 1401 - Basic Electricity for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
    • HART 1407 - Refrigeration Principles
    • HART 2431 - Advanced Electricity for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
    • HART 1441 - Residential Air Conditioning
    • OSHT 1305 - OSHA 10

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Skilled in using computerized systems including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Skilled in customer service and problem solving
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle or equipment
  • Ability to use interpersonal skills, thinking, reasoning, and sound judgment to decide how duties and responsibilities are completed

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representatives of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
