About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is seeking a Business Development Manager (Quantum, Photonics & Electronics) to lead and expand strategic industry partnerships, accelerating research translation and industry engagement across the Quantum, Photonics and Electronics portfolio. This role supports the University's high priority Collective Excellence 28 (CE28) initiative.

Based within the Research Pipeline and Pre Award team, this senior role focuses on translating world class research capability into funded, impact driven collaborations across quantum technologies, photonics, advanced electronics and enabling technologies. Working closely with researchers, Faculty leaders and external partners, you will play a key role in advancing industry led research outcomes aligned with the University's strategic plan.

The Collective Excellence 2028 (CE28) Research advances the University's ambition to be a globally recognised leader in research with real world impact. CE28 aligns academic leadership, institutional investment and professional support to enable large scale, multidisciplinary research that addresses complex global challenges. Through focused Areas for Acceleration, streamlined research processes, and strengthened pathways to international collaboration and major external funding, CE28 empowers academics to lead globally competitive research programs, attract top partners and talent, and translate excellence into societal, economic and policy impact.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • develop and manage strategic partnerships with industry, government and other external stakeholders aligned to quantum, photonics and electronics research strengths
  • collaborate with researchers and senior leaders to identify, shape and secure research funding and engagement opportunities
  • manage and prioritise industry engagement activity in line with CE28 strategic objectives
  • act as a trusted relationship manager for complex research collaborations
  • guide stakeholders through collaborative research policies, regulatory frameworks and engagement processes
  • identify and nurture new opportunities across government programs, commissioned research and industry led initiatives
  • prepare engagement reports, briefings and materials to support funding, investment and decision making.

About you

  • extensive experience (typically 5-10 years) in business development, research commercialisation or industry engagement within a technology intensive or research environment
  • a Postgraduate Degree in Science or relevant technical discipline, or equivalent senior industry experience
  • strong industry networks within quantum, photonics, electronics or closely related sectors
  • proven ability to influence senior academic, government and industry stakeholders
  • strong analytical and problem solving skills, with sound judgement in complex environments
  • the ability to operate autonomously while contributing strategically within a senior team
  • willingness to travel as required to support stakeholder engagement and partnership activity.

3-year, fixed term opportunity. Located on the Camperdown Campus

Base Salary $146,197 - $154,260 (HEO9) + 17% superannuation
