Position Overview

As a member of CNMS Business Central, the Payroll Business Services Specialist supports the payroll and hiring functions for an assigned portfolio of departments in the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences.

Telework

A hybrid telework schedule may be available.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Financial Management, the incumbent is responsible for providing payroll and hiring support to an assigned portfolio of departments in the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences. Primary duties include:

  • Process all payroll and human resources paperwork for all hiring, transfers, terminations, labor distributions or other actions for all employee types
  • Interpret, review and process time entry and other personnel data in PeopleSoft
  • Ensure compliance with university payroll policies and procedures and advise department faculty and staff with respect to those policies
  • Review current processes and procedures and makes recommendations for business process improvements

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Six years progressively responsible experience in a combination of budgeting, accounting, payroll, purchasing, and personnel work.
    Note: Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; basic organizational and analytical skills along with the ability to manage multiple assignments under time deadlines.
  • Ability to understand and interpret university policies in areas such as human resources, finance and payroll; ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters and information with discretion and tact; and a commitment to exemplary customer service skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills with a proven track record of streamlining business processes and resolving complex issues.
  • Familiarity with university, system, and state-level business policies and procedures; direct experience in a higher education setting is strongly preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.

Salary

Pay Range 11 (minimum: $23.77/hr to maximum: $31.49/hr) based on the University System of Maryland (USM) Pay Program. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, Memorandum of Understanding, USM Board of Regent policies, internal equity, budget and qualifications and experience. Most salary offers will be close to the minimum part of the range. The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
