CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR A RESEARCH GRANT WITHIN THE SCOPE OF AN R&D PROJECT. Galician Association of Agri-food Cooperatives (AGACA), Xunta de Galicia - General Directorate of Livestock, Agriculture and Agri-food Industries (DXGAIA), Association for the Support of Dairy Cattle Farming in the North (ABLN) and the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDRN), financed by the Interreg Spain-Portugal Cross-Border Cooperation Program (POCTEP), through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The grant is intended for research and development activities within the scope of the ecological transition of the livestock sector in the Galicia-Northern Portugal Euroregion, according to the specific conditions of each reference.
The conditions for awarding the grant are as follows:
Scientific area: Animal and Veterinary Sciences
Required academic degree: Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Agronomy - Animal Production, Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Nursing, or related fields.
Term of the grant: 12 months (with a planned start in October 2026) with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 24 months or until the end of the project, as provided for in Article 4 of the UNIPVC Research Grant Regulations and subject to project funding authorization.
Admission Requirements:
Candidates must be enrolled in a master's program or make a commitment to do so. Candidates must possess a driver's license.
Prior experience with production animals, particularly in cattle handling, is valued.
Work Plan:
The fellow will join the technical team responsible for evaluating and implementing innovative solutions that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve the sustainability of the agricultural sector, collaborating on the following tasks:
- Conducting field tests and calibrating equipment for GHG collection;
- Collecting and analyzing production and GHG data;
- Supporting the definition of predictive models for GHG emissions;
- Implementing biotechnological measures for GHG control and mitigation;
- Preparing technical reports, scientific articles, and dissemination activities;
- Participation in science outreach and capacity-building activities for the transition of the environmental footprint in the livestock sector.
The fellow will perform their duties on a full-time basis, as stipulated in Article 14 of the UNIPVC Research Grant Regulations.
Scientific supervision: Professor Joaquim Orlando Lima Cerqueira.
Grant Duration: The grant will last for 12 months (with a planned start in October 2026) with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 24 months, as stipulated in paragraph 4 of article 4 of the UNIPVC Research Grant Regulations and subject to project funding authorization.
Applicable legislation and regulations: FCT, I.P. Research Grant Regulations (RBI), approved by Regulation No. 950/2019 and UNIPVC Research Grant Regulations approved by Order No. 7347/2020, of July 22.
Workplace: Higher School of Agriculture of the Polytechnic University of Viana do Castelo (ESA-UNIPVC), under the scientific guidance of the researchers responsible for each area.
Monthly maintenance allowance amount: The scholarship amount corresponds to €1090.98 according to the table of allowances for research grants at UNIPVC, updated by Order of the then President of IPVC on 07-04-2026, and will be paid via bank transfer.
Special requirement for granting the scholarship amount: It is necessary to present a national tax identification number (NIF) by the end of the month in which the contract is signed, otherwise the payment will not be enforceable.
Evaluation of applications:
The evaluation will focus on the merit of the candidate (MC), applying the following criteria (0 to 20 points):
a) Curriculum evaluation – 50%
The curriculum evaluation will be based on the following points: academic qualifications [20 points], previous experience in research projects and activities [30 points], fieldwork experience [30 points] and scientific production [20]
c) Interview - 50%
The interview evaluation will be based on the following points: motivation for the project objectives [30 points], adequacy of knowledge and skills to the project objectives and methodology [40 points], oral communication skills [15 points], teamwork skills [15 points].
The final classification will result from the weighted average between the curriculum evaluation (50%) and the interview (50%).
Only candidates who obtain a score of 10 or higher in the Curriculum Evaluation will be selected for the interview. If, eventually, none of the candidates possess the profile suitable for the nature of the tasks to be performed and their good performance, the selection jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship to any of the candidates.
Applications will be evaluated taking into account the selection criteria stated above.
In the event of withdrawal by the selected scholarship holder, the second candidate on the ranked list of candidates will automatically be selected, and so on sequentially, until all candidates presented have been exhausted.
Composition of the Selection Jury: Professor Dr. Joaquim Orlando Lima Cerqueira (President of the jury), Professor Dr. José Pedro Pinto de Araújo (full member), Professor Dr. Maria Laura da Costa Soares (full member), Professor Dr. Joana Margarida Ferreira da Costa Reis (alternate member) and Professor Dr. Joana Lopes Teixeira Nogueira Santos (alternate member).
Method of publication/notification of results: The evaluation results will be published on the UNIPVC Portal (www.ipvc.pt) – results proposed by the jury, minutes and final ranking list. After notification, candidates will have 10 working days to comment on the draft decision, in a prior hearing of interested parties, in accordance with the Administrative Procedure Code. The final decision will be made after the prior hearing period has ended, and will be notified to all candidates by email.
Application deadline and submission method: The application period runs until the 10th consecutive day from the date of publication.
Applications must be formalized by sending an application letter stating the title and reference of the project, describing the candidate's motivation and professional objectives, accompanied by the following documents:
- Curriculum vitae;
- Letter of motivation;
- Copy of the academic qualification certificate at the bachelor's degree level and proof of enrollment in a master's course.
- Updated document proving professional status, indicating the nature of the employment relationship, functions, and average annual workload (if applicable), which may be replaced by a declaration under oath if the candidate does not perform any professional activity or provide services.
- Letters of recommendation (optional and a maximum of two);
- Holder of language skills at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in at least one of these languages.
Science ID.
Candidates holding a bachelor's degree obtained abroad must prove the recognition of the degree in Portugal, in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16, and other applicable legislation, by the deadline for applications.
If the candidate does not have Portuguese or English as their mother tongue, they must possess language skills at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in at least one of these languages.
