1 Research Grant Announcement (M/F)

Call open for applications for a research grant within the framework of the project “RAICC - Responsible AI Call Center”, with nr. 25476 and operation code at the Funds Platform (Balcão dos Fundos) COMPETE2030-FEDER-03033600, co-financed by the European Union through the COMPETE 2030 Programme, of Portugal 2030, under the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Machine Learning

Admission requirements: Candidates who cumulatively meet the following two requirements may apply for this grant:

Requirement 1:

Be a student enrolled in a doctoral program in the area of Computer Science, Informatics Engineering, Artificial Intelligence or Data Science, or related area, a requirement to be duly proven at the time of signing the contract.

To be enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, a requirement to be duly proven at the time of signing the contract.

Requirement 2:

Hold a master’s degree in Computer Science/Informatics Engineering or related field.

If the degree has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of the Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of august 16th, and any formalities established there must be fulfilled until the time of signing the contract.

Activity Outline:

The fellow will develop work on the following theme: Development and validation of robustness characterization methods for machine learning models on time series based on dataset morphing.

In this context, the fellow’s work plan will consist of the following tasks:

Preliminary studies and state-of-the-art review on the robustness of machine learning models and on dataset morphing techniques, including the literature review;
Preparation of datasets and design of algorithms and models for robustness characterization, defining the approach to address the problem;
Development and prototyping of the proposed solution and its empirical evaluation;
Dissemination and promotion of results, namely through the writing of a research paper.

Legislation and regulations: Law Nº. 40/2004, of 18th August, in its current wording (Statutes of Scientific Research Fellow) and Regulation of Research Grants of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, in force and Regulation of Research Grants of University of Porto, in force.

Workplace: The work will be developed at the Department of Informatics Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), or Fraunhofer AICOS, under the scientific supervision of Professor Carlos Manuel Milheiro de Oliveira Pinto Soares.

Grant duration: Initial duration of 12 months, with the predicted starting date in september 2026, on an exclusive basis, eventually renewable but never exceeding the end of the project.

If it is not possible to ensure the duration of 12 months estimated in the previous paragraph, this duration will be adjusted according to the end date of the project, and provided that the minimum duration of 3 consecutive months is guaranteed, in accordance with paragraph 3 of article 6 of the Research Grant Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.

The eventual renewal of the scholarship will be carried out as determined in article 6 of the Research Grants Regulation of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.

Stipend: The grant stipend amounts to 1.359,64 € according to the table of values of the grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the Country. The payment will be made by bank transfer.

Note: The present notice is published pending the signature of the Acceptance Term and the consortium contract of Project RAICC, therefore, for this reason and for reasons of interest of the institution, by means of a duly reasoned act, this selection process may be terminated until before notification of the selection minutes to the applicants, within the scope of the hearing of interested parties.

Selection procedure:

The curriculum of the candidates (50%) will be evaluated based on the merit of the candidate, and the following factors will be assessed:

Academic training: Master in Computer Science, Informatics Engineering, or Artificial Intelligenece and Data Science - up to 5 points; Master in related areas – up to 3 points; Other Masters – 0 points;
Classification of academic education: average equal/greater than 16/20 – 5 points; average equal/greater than 14/20 and below 16/20 – 3 points; other values – 0 points;
Research Experience in Machine Learning and the topics of the project, including publications – up to 5 points; basic knowledge of machine learning – up to 3 points; no research experience nor knowledge of machine learning – 0 points;
Proficiency in the English language, to be assessed by the motivation letter – up to 5 points.

Candidates will be ranked on a scale of 1 to 20 points, with the three best-ranked candidates in the curriculum evaluation being admitted to the interview (50%), provided they score equal or above 16 points. In the interview (50%), topics related to the work plan, previous experience, motivation, and candidate's CV will be discussed.

If none of the candidates achieves a minimum final score of 16 points, the scholarship will not be awarded.
