General Information:
JMU's Youth Programs department is looking for camp counselors to work one or more of our science camps in July. The positions will start around July 1st and will end July 31st.
- July 13 - 17 - Science Explorers Camp (rising 9th - 12th grades). Please note: This camp requires the counselors to stay in dorms overnight from Monday - Friday. Overtime pay given during this week.
- July 20 - 24 - Science Explorers Camp (rising 5th - 8th grades) - 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each day
- July 27 - 31 - Science Explorers Camp (rising 1st - 4th grades) - 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each day
Please note there is mandatory paid camp counselor training on July 7th and 8th from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM each day.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead a small group of campers under the supervision of the Camp Director and Assistant Director
- Supervise and ensure the safety and well-being of campers
- Foster a positive and supportive camp environment that encourages participation and exploration
- Serve as a reliable, supportive adult presence whom students feel comfortable approaching for guidance, help, and conflict resolution
Qualifications:
- Ability to manage a small group of campers effectively while handling any behavioral challenges, addressing student needs, etc.
- Ability to maintain a calm, patient, and positive demeanor
- Clear and effective communication skills when interacting with campers, staff, and parents/guardians
- Must pass a background check and professional reference checks
Conditions of Employment: Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check. This is a part-time wage position working up to an average of 29 hours per week over the course of a calendar year with no benefits.
