Capstone Director

Capstone Director

This position has been deemed critical by the School of Humanities and Sciences Dean's Office and is exempt from the hiring freeze.

The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 24 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. H&S is home to fundamental and applied research, where free, open, and critical inquiry is pursued across disciplines. As the university's largest school, H&S serves as the foundation of a Stanford undergraduate education no matter which discipline students pursue as a major. Graduate students work alongside world-renowned faculty to pursue and shape foundational research that leads to breakthroughs and discoveries that shed new light on the past, influence the present, and shape the future. Together, faculty and students in H&S engage in inspirational teaching, learning, and research every day.

The Program in Human Biology is a large and diverse interdepartmental undergraduate major that was officially launched over 50 years ago. The program's mission is to provide an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the human being from biological, behavioral, social, and cultural perspectives. Each Human Biology student designs an individualized course of study focused on an area of interest within the broad scope of the program. Students also can pursue research or other creative projects within the major as part of their capstone requirement. More information on the various Capstone options can be found at: http://humanbiology.stanford.edu/

The Program grants both a B.A. and a B.S. option. The B.S. degree allows students a scientific and technical focus for their studies. It requires completion of coursework and specialization in the biological sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, and/or computer science and engineering. The B.A. degree is designed for students pursuing a traditional liberal arts degree with coursework predominantly in the social and behavioral sciences. Either degree suits various career trajectories, including attending masters or PhD programs or professional school, such as medical school or law school.

The Program in Human Biology seeks a talented and committed professional to direct the Capstone requirement as well as the co-curricular experiences of HumBio majors more broadly. Candidates' experiences and strengths should demonstrate the ability to maintain and develop opportunities with other University partners and alumni as well as engage on career-focused topics with the declared majors. The Capstone Director will develop and implement the capstone requirement within the framework of the program's strategic goals. This position works in close collaboration with the Program's leadership and is responsible for developing campus relationships in support of students seeking related professional experiences.

The Capstone Director will develop and lead courses and/or workshops and will recruit faculty to provide a range of research opportunities for majors in Human Biology both in the natural and social sciences.

The Capstone Director will demonstrate a positive outlook, maintain a team-based and student-focused mindset, and be motivated to enhance student offerings and improve processes. It is critical that candidates exhibit effective written & oral communication, strong attention to detail and respectful relationship management, as well as the ability to practice sound judgment and decision-making. Successful candidates must also exhibit a strong desire to keep learning new skills, policies, and procedures as they relate to advising and academic services--the ability to translate this information into operational success will be critical.

This is a 100% FTE, continuing, exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working on-site and off-site), subject to operational need.

If you believe that this opportunity is a match for your knowledge, skills and abilities, we encourage you to apply. For full consideration, please include a resume and cover letter. Thank you for considering employment opportunities with the School of Humanities and Sciences.
