BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
The Cardiac Device Technician works closely with the Device Nursing Team, Electrophysiologists and Advance Practice Providers in both the outpatient and inpatient setting and is responsible for monitoring and reviewing cardiac rhythms in person as well as from transmissions from remote vendor web-based systems. The Cardiac Device Technician will also be responsible for utilizing established standard operating procedures to complete perioperative and testing management of the Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Device (CIED).
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Identify pacemaker capture, sensing and basic heart rhythms.
- Analyze device data to identify any abnormalities or events and collaborate with physicians to develop a plan of care.
- Evaluate and review remote downloads of cardiac devices which includes downloading data, interpreting device measurements, interpretating complex arrhythmias, analyzing data that reflects clinical scenarios, retrieving and triaging of clinical information.
- Create summary report of preliminary findings including pacing thresholds, device therapies administered, thoracic impedance and arrhythmia burden for review and recommendation by the Advance Practice Provider.
- Review operative cases and determine if device is magnet appropriate based on the manufacturer’s recommendation. Based on findings, consult with fellow or attending anesthesiologist to provide safe programming.
- Perform post procedure safety checks and device reprogramming based on provider orders. Notify Device RN about rhythm changes and need for device reprogramming rate changes.
- For patients with an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD) undergoing MRI testing, perform safety checks and device reprograming to original settings with additional safety checks.
- Perform device interrogations, reprogramming, and functional assessments during patient clinic visits or remotely, ensuring optimal device function and patient safety.
- Support after hours perioperative device needs with rotational on-call.
- Maintain accurate and detailed patient records concerning device implants, follow-ups, and any interventions.
- May provide information and education to patients and families about device purpose, function, and maintenance.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Direct supervision is received from the Department Supervisor.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires infrequent standing/walking.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Relevant experience as a Pacemaker Device Technician or in a similar role within a cardiology setting.
- Graduation from an accredited Cardiac Implanted External Device program or experience with management of home monitoring for ICDs/ Pacemakers or certification in cardiac device management.
- High school diploma or GED.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 5 years' experience with CIEDs (Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic devices).
- Certification as a Cardiac Device Specialist by the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE).
- Formal training with Cardiac Devices.
- Experience with PACEART, Carelink, Latitude, Merlin, St. Jude’s, and Biotronik Home Monitoring.
Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. Hybrid.
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
