The certified nurse midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice nurse who is responsible for the assessment, plan, implementation, and evaluation of nurse midwifery care delivered to antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum, and newborn patients. The CNM performs physical exams, collects and documents data, manages labor and spontaneous delivery, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, and prescribes appropriate interventions and medications. The CNM must have the ability to work closely with collaborating faculty physicians in a university group practice setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

  1. Master’s degree in nursing.
  2. RN licensure in state of WV and Certified Nurse Midwife license in WV.

EXPERIENCE:

  1. Minimum two years’ experience as a certified nurse midwife.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide direct clinical services and management of mothers and babies as defined in the standing orders, policies, procedures, and protocols for the certified nurse midwife.
  2. Obtain patient health histories and complete physical examinations.
  3. Document findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings.
  4. Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests.
  5. Explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects to patient, family, staff, and healthcare learners.
  6. Perform approved therapeutic procedures based upon patient’s clinical status.
  7. Document patient preparation and response to procedure(s).
  8. Formulate and implement prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn, and interconceptional care as defined by the nurse midwifery service.
  9. Collaborate with physician and nursing colleagues and document in medical records and appropriate narrative summaries.
  10. Document all prescriptions in patients’ medical records.
  11. Assess patient for change in status and institute appropriate interventions.
  12. Initiate necessary emergency interventions to stabilize patient.
  13. Provide patient and family education related to prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and interconceptional care.

  2. Answer telephones and transcribe messages.

  5. May be required to travel between facilities/buildings.
  6. Must meet Department of Labor’s MEDIUM duty standard (MEDIUM WORK- exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly).
  7. Able to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 8-10 hour shift.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Must demonstrate and maintain credentialing and licensing requirements.
  2. Able to seek out resources and solve complex problems.
  3. Able to communicate and work effectively with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others. Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow-up.
  4. Must be able to participate in provision of on-call services of the group practice.

Additional Job Description:

Located in Martinsburg, WV, Berkeley Medical Center serves the community as a 195-bed non-profit acute care hospital. BMC offers full radiology services including MRI, PET, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology; a wound care center with two hyperbaric chambers, a Level III NICU, a 20-bed ICU, oncology services, neurosurgery services (including a Mazor robot) and a Cardiac Cath Lab. BMC recently expanded OR services by adding four new outpatient ORs and five new ORs in the main hospital to grow services in robotics, orthopedics, and vascular health.

Our Eastern Panhandle location is a little more than an hour from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD. A rural atmosphere and a lower cost of living mixed with the easy accessibility to the Washington DC / Baltimore areas make the Eastern Panhandle an ideal place in which to live. While Berkeley County is among the fastest growing counties in the state, there is little congestion and traffic. In recent years, a steady influx of urban professionals from nearby Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland - have contributed to the growth of local telecommuting and high-tech industries.
